Google will issue an update to fix unresponsive spots on the Pixel 2 XL’s touchscreen

If you’re the owner of one of Google’s Pixel 2 XL devices, there’s more bad news: some users are reporting that the touchscreen is not responding to touches along the edge of the device, as reported by Phandroid. Users reported the issue on the Pixel User Community, and one user posted a video that showed the screen not responding when being tapped on the edge of the right-hand side. There was also some unresponsiveness on the left-hand side in the video.

Volvo’s parent company just bought a ‘flying car’ startup

In another huge confidence boost for the nascent “flying car” industry, Volvo’s Chinese parent company announced today that it has completed its acquisition of Terrafugia, a startup founded by MIT engineers and MBA students.

News of the purchase first leaked back in July, when the South China Morning Post reported that China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. was considering adding the 11-year-old Terrafugia to its portfolio. Spaceplane meant to resupply the space station pulled off a successful glide flight this weekend

On Saturday, private spaceflight company Sierra Nevada announced that its Dream Chaser spaceplane had successfully glided and landed on a runway after being released from a helicopter. The stunt, done at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, is known as a free-flight test and is meant to test out the vehicle’s landing capabilities. It’s an important milestone in the Dream Chaser’s development, as Sierra Nevada readies the plane for spaceflight.

Women might be less likely to get CPR because people are afraid of touching their chests

Women who are having a heart attack are less likely to get bystander CPR and more likely to die, according to a new study — and it may be because people are reluctant to touch women’s chests.

A new study looked at 20,000 cases of cardiac arrest and found that 39 percent of women who had heart attacks in a public place received CPR, compared to 45 percent of men. Possibly as a result, men were 23 percent more likely to survive. The results were discussed at the American Heart Association conference in Anaheim, California, and were reported by The Associated Press. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Heart Association, and will be published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

One of my favorite things about the tech industry is how quickly innovations from the big companies and premium products trickle down into more affordable devices. The rampant stealing of ideas isn't so awesome when it happens between small companies — or, as in the case of Facebook treating Snapchat like its incubation lab, when a big company copies a smaller one. But I don’t have a problem with the general flow of good ideas from giants like Apple and Google to more budget-friendly suppliers of hardware and software. Apple and Google, though, have an obvious problem with that, and they’ve worked hard to develop new techniques and approaches that can’t be readily imitated.

Spotify now sells makeup

Spotify has added another side hustle: selling makeup. Celebrated makeup artist Pat McGrath, known for her beauty brand Pat McGrath Labs, is partnering with “Pretty Girl” singer Maggie Lindemann to release a makeup collection that’ll be sold on Lindemann’s artist page. This $150 mask beat Face ID on the iPhone X

Vietnamese cybersecurity firm Bkav claims it's been able to bypass the iPhone X's Face ID feature using a mask. The mask is made to trick Apple's depth mapping and the result is a kind of creepy hybrid monster head with realistic cutouts for the eyes, nose and mouth.

Bkav says the mask is crafted through a combination of 3D printing, makeup, and 2D images. There's also some "special processing done on the cheeks and around the face" where there are large areas of skin, and the nose is created from silicone. The demo video shows the iPhone being unlocked using the researcher's face and then again using the mask, in just one go.

The cost of making the mask is relatively inexpensive at $150, says Bkav, which began working on the mask...

I’m a huge fan of Lev Grossman’s Magicians novels, which are the basis for the Syfy show by the same name. Hasbro reportedly offered to buy Mattel

Hasbro is one of the largest toy companies in the world (after Lego), and according to a report in The Wall Street Journal, it recently made an offer to take over its chief rival, Mattel.

If the deal were to go through, it would bring the two largest toy companies in the US and their vast catalog of brands together. The WSJ’s sources say that the deal was made recently, didn’t disclose terms, and that it might not go anywhere.

But, the deal could be an opportunity for Mattel, which has struggled financially in recent years. The company reported a decline in sales after Toys R’ Us filed for bankruptcy in September. Ohio State had a bit of fun at Apple’s expense during today’s game against MSU

Earlier this week, some Apple users using iOS 11.1 experienced a glitch: if they typed in the letter “I”, it prompted an autocorrect suggestion of “A[?],” prompting a number of jokes around the internet. Apparently, the glitch also impacted Ohio State fans during today’s game against Michigan State.

During a break in the game, the university led the crowd in a card stunt to chant “OHIO,” using a group of people holding giant cards to form the letters. Only this time, they decided to have a bit of fun at Apple’s expense, by replacing “I” with “A[?]”.

UPS is hoping to convert most of its New York City fleet from diesel to electric

UPS is partnering with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to develop new technology to switch its diesel-fueled delivery vehicles to over to electric power.

The NYSERDA will provide $500,000 to help develop the technology, with the hope that the company will have a production version ready for spring 2018, and that by 2022, they will have switched over up to 1,500 trucks, or 66 percent of the fleet operating in the city.

Unique Electric Solutions is the company that developed the technology behind the conversions, which features a “225kW Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) with a high voltage back bone optimized for the duty cycle of UPS delivery trucks.”

In an interview in The Hollywood Reporter on Friday, model Scott R. Brunton accused Star Trek actor George Takei of sexual assault, which allegedly took place in the actor’s condo in 1981. New trailers: The Crown, The Post, Coco, and more

I've really been enjoying reading about Taika Waititi and his approach to directing the new Thor movie. We had an interview with him earlier this week, and there's a nice Vanity Fair video where he breaks down his approach to a scene, which includes a lot of Waititi mocking himself.

I saw the movie over the weekend, and it really is pretty fun. In fact, the entire movie is structured around kind of just letting Waititi and the cast mess around — there's a quick setup of a villain at the beginning, a quick takedown at the end, and pretty much nothing of consequence in between. The whole middle of the movie is just one goofy, unrelated romp.

It's a structure that could easily be a mess — and it does leave the film with a weak villain — but...
