The frighteningly simple technique that hijacked Jack Dorsey’s Twitter account

Secure Laptop Hacking Story

Friday afternoon, Jack Dorsey’s 4.2 million Twitter followers got an unpleasant surprise. A group of vandals had gained access to the account, and used that access to blast out a stream of offensive messages and plugs for their group’s discord channel. Within 15 minutes, the account was back under control and the group was banned from Discord, but the incident was a reminder of the serious vulnerabilities in even the highest-profile accounts, and just how insecure phone-based authentication has become.

The hackers got in through Twitter’s text-to-tweet service, operated by the acquired service Cloudhopper. Using Cloudhopper, Twitter users can post tweets by texting messages to a shortcode number, usually 40404. It’s a useful trick for S...

13 new trailers you should watch this week

Photo: Disney

Netflix announced this week that a number of its fall films will have exclusive theatrical runs before they start streaming. This isn’t the first time Netflix has debuted its films in theaters — a few hit theaters first last year, too — but this year’s theatrical slate is much larger and seems to indicate something of a shift in strategy.

This year, Netflix is putting 10 movies in theaters ahead of time, up from just three last year (though a fourth was added later). It’ll range from a quiet relationships drama (Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story) to an over-the-top comedy (the Eddie Murphy- led Dolemite Is My Name) to prestige fare (Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman).

That’s a significant portion of Netflix’s fall film slate, and it includes...

Border agents are checking entrants’ Facebook and Twitter profiles — but we still don’t know how closely

New Full Body Scanners At Logan Airport Photo by John Tlumacki/The Boston Globe via Getty Images

Earlier this week, incoming Harvard freshman Ismail B. Ajjawi found himself blocked from entering the US. Ajjawi, a Palestinian resident of Lebanon, had landed in Boston before the start of classes. But The Harvard Crimson reported that after hours of questioning, US Customs and Border Protection agents revoked his visa. Ajjawi said a CBP agent searched his phone and laptop while asking questions about his friends’ social media activity. Then, she “started screaming at me,” Ajjawi said. “She said that she found people posting political points of view that oppose the US on my friend[s] list.”

CBP hasn’t revealed what actually got Ajjawi’s visa revoked. “Specific information on individual travelers cannot be released due to the Privacy Act...

North’s Focals smart glasses now support Android’s notification actions

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

North has added native support for Android’s notification actions to its Focals smart glasses. Using the new functionality, you’ll now be able to access any shortcuts app developers include in their app’s notifications. 9to5Google, which first spotted the update, notes that these actions can include deleting or archiving emails in the Gmail app or retweeting tweets on Twitter.

The feature should make it easier to rely more on your smart glasses without having to take your phone out of your pocket, similar to the functionality that was previously available with Google Glass. Unfortunately, the new feature is only available to Android users for the time being, so it’s unable to help with one of our biggest issues with the Focals, which is...

Amazon’s sales platform may be too big to police

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

When a tech platform grows beyond a certain size, a now-familiar phenomenon begins to unfold. The creators no longer have a view of — or control over — all the day-to-day activity on the platform, allowing bad actors to manipulate it to their own ends.

On Twitter, this led to unchecked harassment and abuse, much of it focused on women and minorities. On Facebook, it led to Cambridge Analytica and Russian interference in the 2016 election. On YouTube, it led to a surge in extremist content, boosted by algorithmic recommendations.

Last week, thanks to a terrific investigation in the Wall Street Journal, we saw how size has blinded Amazon to a host of dangerous products that third-party sellers have made available. Alexandra Berzon, Shane...

Google reveals major iPhone security flaws that let websites hack phones

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Security researchers working in Google’s Project Zero team say they have discovered a number of hacked websites which used previously undisclosed security flaws to indiscriminately attack any iPhone that visited them. Motherboard reports that the attack could be one of the largest ever conducted against iPhone users. If a user visited one of the malicious websites using a vulnerable device, then their personal files, messages, and real time location data could be compromised. After reporting their findings to Apple, the iPhone manufacturer patched the vulnerabilities earlier this year.

Motherboard notes that the attack could have allowed the sites to install an implant with access to an iPhone’s keychain. This would have given the...

Lime, Jump, Bird pledge to remove their Miami scooters to avoid flying menaces

Illustration by William Joel / The Verge

Hurricane Dorian’s expected landfall on Florida has Miami, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Tampa scrambling to remove bikes and scooters from their streets. If the devices aren’t removed from the streets, they could potentially be picked up by hurricane winds — transforming into threats to people and property.

Miami has demanded that all of these mobility companies remove their products from the streets by noon on Friday, Bloomberg reported. Tampa has not yet issued a request for removal, but if (or when) it does, the companies will have 12 hours to comply with it. (“All of our vendors appear prepared for that requirement, and are staying tuned to the weather notices,” says a spokesperson for the city of Tampa.) Lime, Uber’s scooter...

Xiaomi announces another 64-megapixel phone because those are a thing now

Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Xiaomi has announced the latest entry in its phenomenally popular Redmi Note series and, just as the Redmi Note 7 heralded a flood of 48-megapixel phone cameras earlier this year, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is among the first with a 64-megapixel sensor. Realme semi-revealed its XT with the same sensor a couple of days ago, but Xiaomi has now made a full announcement, so feel free to debate among yourselves as to who was truly first.

Why would you want a 64-megapixel camera? Well, as with 48-megapixel phones, it’s generally not so you can shoot at full resolution. Both sensor designs use 0.8μm pixels that are grouped together in fours for better light sensitivity that’s supposedly equivalent to 1.6μm pixels. Using that technique, a 48-megapixel...

You can now quickly switch Gmail accounts on Android with a swipe

Swipe up or down on the small profile picture in the top right to switch accounts. | Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge

There’s now a simpler way of swiping between Gmail accounts on Android that has long existed in iOS. Android Police reports that as of version 2019.08.18 of the app, you can swipe up or down on your profile picture in the top right of the interface to switch between accounts. Alternatively, you can tap on your profile picture to select from a full list of your accounts, just as you could before.

If this sounds familiar, then it’s because Google has been steadily adding the feature to its lineup of Android apps including, as Android Police notes, Maps, Drive, and Contacts. However, it’s a much more useful inclusion in the Gmail app, because so many people access both their personal and work emails on a single phone and need to flip...

We’re still not getting voice assistants right

Google Home Mini Photo by Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images

The BBC is launching its own voice assistant, appropriately called ‘Beeb’ (though the efficacy of that wake word is completely suspect in a world where people might talk about Justin Bieber, just saying). Upon hearing this news, you might be tempted to think, “Ugh, why? This isn’t necessary.” I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion.

The Beeb assistant might be a boondoggle, a waste of British taxpayer money, and a classic example of the BBC making a tech thing without a super clear reason or need just because it can. In fact, I would put even money on it being all three of those things, but I’m still rooting for it anyway.

I’m rooting for Beeb because we still are screwing up this whole ambient computing, digital assistant thing. Thanks to...

Facebook adds new requirements for political advertisers

Facebook is adding new requirements for political advertisers, the company said on Wednesday, as part of its efforts to make the platform more secure in the run-up to the 2020 election. Before buying a political ad, advertisers will need to provide more information about their organization, including government-issued identification numbers. The move, which will take effect in mid-September, comes in response to some advertisers using misleading names in their disclaimers in order to disguise their identities.

“In 2018 we did see that our disclaimer process was something that could be misused,” Sarah Schiff, a Facebook product manager, told The Verge. “This is an effort to strengthen that process.”

Today’s changes mark an evolution in...

YouTube may push users to more radical views over time, a new paper argues

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

YouTube’s difficult summer rolls on. Recent stories have revealed that the company might be accidentally generating video playlists for pedophiles; the Federal Trade Commission is investigating the site’s targeting of ads toward children; and the New York Times linked the site’s popularity to the rise of right-wing extremism in Brazil. (Also: everything linked at the top this column.)

But nothing has defined YouTube’s summer more than the conflict between Vox.com video host Carlos Maza and right-wing pundit Steven Crowder. The conflict — over whether someone with millions of followers should be allowed to repeatedly call another YouTuber a “lispy queer” — highlighted the gap between what YouTube’s community guidelines say is allowed, and...

Vivo Nex 3’s ‘waterfall’ display and camera shown off in hands-on video

Video: Mrwhosetheboss / YouTube

A day after Vivo posted a short teaser trailer on its Weibo account, the first hands on video of the upcoming Vivo Nex 3 has been published online. The video comes from British YouTuber Arun “Mrwhosetheboss” Maini, and although it’s light on specifics and features pre-production hardware and software, it gives us a pretty extensive look at the Nex 3’s “waterfall” curved display, camera, and 5G connectivity.

The video suggests the early rumors of the phone having a screen-to-body ratio of “over 100 percent” might not be entirely accurate thanks to the presence of small top and bottom screen bezels, but it’s still impressive how far the screen screen extends round the sides of the device. Vivo has even switched the side power and volume...

Photos of what could be Google’s upcoming Pixel 4 have leaked via Telegram, XDA-Developers is reporting. The images appear to show a device that’s consistent with the official pics and information that’s been released about the phone by Google. They also suggest that the company is moving away from the two-tone color-schemes found on previous Pixels.

It’s unclear what the source of the photos might be. XDA’s Mishaal Rahman said on Twitter that the images were shared in a “(very) small channel” on Telegram, and that they were also posted in a “private group” by someone who denied knowing the source of the images. XDA speculates that we’re looking at a prototype handset that’s being tested by Sprint on its network, due to the prominent...

Canon announces 32-megapixel 90D DSLR and mirrorless M6 Mark II

Canon has announced two new enthusiast-grade cameras that are similar in capability but very different in form. Whether you’d get along better with the EOS 90D or the EOS M6 Mark II will entirely depend on your feelings about the never-ending DSLR-versus-mirrorless debate.

Both cameras have a new 32.5-megapixel APS-C image sensor, a DIGIC 8 image processor, an electronic shutter capable of speeds up to 1/16000, uncropped 4K/30 video recording, dual-pixel autofocus in live view with 5,481 selectable points, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. But the 90D looks like every other mid-range Canon DSLR, while the M6 Mark II’s compact form is essentially unchanged from the original M6 from 2017.

There are a few differences in...

Telegram will launch its Gram cryptocurrency by October 31 or bust

Photo by Tom Warren / The Verge

Telegram’s cryptocurrency— the Gram — may be going public after all. The encrypted messaging app company plans to deliver “the first batches” of the coin in the next two months, according to a report at The New York Times.

The last time we reported on the Gram, it was to note that Telegram was canceling its initial coin offering (ICO), so the news may come as a bit of a surprise unless you’ve been following Telegram and cryptocurrency closely. But if you have, you’ve probably heard a rumor that Telegram has a hard deadline to make it happen: if it doesn’t deliver by October 31st, it legally forfeits the $1.7 billion it raised to make those coins a reality.

That October 31st deadline is real, according to legal documents reviewed by the T...

Disney+ won’t just nail the content; it could nail the technicals

Photo: Disney

Disney’s D23 conference (it’s always “23,” a reference to 1923, which is the year Disney was founded) kicked off over the weekend with a giant pile of surprisingly exciting trailers for shows that are coming to its Disney+ service. (The Mandalorian, in particular, went from something I expected to skip to something I am very hyped for.) Verge reporter Julia Alexander has been on the ground, writing about all of it.

As we approach the launch of the service, which seems like a guaranteed hit, it’s worth paying attention to the technical aspects. We’ve been taking for granted the fact that Disney can successfully keep the servers running, but I don’t feel bad about that.

The reason I don’t feel bad about taking the technicals for granted...

Fairphone updates its ethical smartphone for 2019

Image: Fairphone

Three years after the release of its last handset, Fairphone has announced the Fairphone 3, its latest attempt at a sustainable smartphone. The Fairphone 3 attempts to deliver on this promise by being easy to repair and by being constructed out of responsibly-sourced, conflict-free, and recycled materials where possible. Fairphone’s betting on a world full of long-lasting repairable phones that would significantly reduce CO2 emissions — a goal shared by iFixit and others in the right-to-repair movement.

Fairphone says that its latest handset is easy to repair thanks to being constructed out of seven modules. This is a similar approach to what the company used for its previous phone, 2016’s Fairphone 2, which earned it a 10/10...

The “close friends” list is the future of Instagram

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

Today, thanks to your tips, I bring you a scoop: a new app called Threads, now in development at Instagram, designed to promote sharing among close friends. I published it a couple hours ago at The Verge:

Facebook is developing a new messaging app called Threads that is meant to promote constant, intimate sharing between users and their closest friends, The Verge has learned. Threads, which is designed as a companion app to Instagram, invites users to automatically share their location, speed, and battery life with friends, along with more typical text, photo, and video messages using Instagram’s creative tools. The app, which is designed for sharing with your “close friends” list on Instagram, is now being tested internally at...

BBC plans ‘Beeb’ voice assistant for its apps and services

UK - Media - BBC HQ Photo by In Pictures Ltd./Corbis via Getty Images

The BBC is producing its own in-house voice assistant called Beeb, which will integrate with the UK public broadcaster’s website and iPlayer apps on smart TVs. The Guardian reports that the corporation currently has no plans to release its own smart speaker featuring the assistant, but will make the software available to other manufacturers who wish to build it into their speakers. Beeb is currently planned for launch next year.

The announcement of the voice assistant comes as the BBC has started to withdraw some of its content from select third party services. Earlier this year it removed its podcasts from certain Google products, and its radio stations are also disappearing from TuneIn at the end of the month. In both cases, the BBC...

Belkin’s cheaper water meter can detect usage and leaks anywhere in the home

The Phyn Smart Water Assistant installed under a kitchen sink. | Image: Phyn

The final frontier for many smart home owners is water management. Things start innocently enough with a few intelligent light bulbs, a dimmer or two, and a motion sensor. Before you know it, you’ve automated the window coverings, installed a video doorbell, a security system, and a whole-home audio system with an integrated smart assistant to control it all. With the visible home conquered, all that’s left are smart meters to measure your increased power usage, and of course, water, one our most precious resources. That’s where the new Phyn Smart Water Assistant comes in, a do-it-yourself water meter which this Belkin company says can help home owners conserve water, avoid trouble, and save money in the process.

Phyn works by attaching...

Nintendo’s long-awaited and delayed Mario Kart smartphone game is almost here. Mario Kart Tour will be released on September 25th, according to a tweet from the company. The release date presumably applies to both iOS and Android devices, although the game’s beta program was Android-only.

That beta revealed Mario Kart Tour’s overwrought free-to-play monetization model, involving lots of microtransactions and cool-down timers. None of it should be a surprise for anyone who’s seen Nintendo’s other mobile games, like Fire Emblem Heroes and Dr. Mario World, but it’s possible the company might have tweaked the balance following feedback from the beta.

Pre-registration for Mario Kart Tour is available now.

Google and Dell team up to take on Microsoft with Chromebook Enterprise laptops

Google is launching new Chromebook Enterprise devices that it hopes will draw more businesses away from Windows-powered laptops. Microsoft has dominated enterprise computing for years, but as businesses increasingly look to modernize their fleet of devices, there’s an opportunity for competitors to challenge Windows. Google is teaming up with one of Microsoft’s biggest partners, Dell, to help push new Chromebook Enterprise laptops into businesses.

Dell is launching Chrome OS on a pair of its popular business-focused Latitude laptops, offering both a regular clamshell design and a 2-in-1 option. While it might sound like just two existing Windows laptops repurposed for Chrome OS, Google and Dell have been working together for more than a...

Baidu overtakes Google in global smart speaker market

Photo by Sam Byford / The Verge

Chinese search giant Baidu is now the world’s second biggest vendor of smart speakers, according to a new report from Canalys. The research firm says Baidu overtook Google to capture 17.3 percent of the global market with 4.5 million shipments in the second quarter of 2019, representing staggering year-on-year growth of 3,700 percent. Amazon remains the overall leader with more than 25 percent share of the market and 6.6 million shipments.

Baidu’s AI speakers run on an AI platform called DuerOS. The company initially targeted the high end of the market with the Teenage Engineering-designed Raven H speaker (above), but that product apparently sold poorly. More recently, Baidu has pushed sales of much less expensive models, with the basic...

10 new trailers you should watch this week

Photo: Warner Bros.

I was excited to watch Cold War, the new film from Ida director PaweÅ‚ Pawlikowski, now that it’s streaming on Amazon. Like Ida, Cold War is shot in gorgeous black and white and has a zoomed-in focus on the oppression felt by an individual during war.

Cold War jumps forward again and again so we can see the isolating effects over time, which is a really neat way to structure a movie that’s trying to show the impact of a seemingly endless standoff. It effectively turns into a series of connected shorts, showing various blips in a couple’s life.

What I found even more confusing was the relationship that it depicted. It’s torn apart and trampled again and again by war, then brought together again by a passion that’s never clearly developed....

Disney+ will give subscribers four simultaneous streams and free 4K

Image: Disney

Disney’s upcoming Disney+ streaming service is shaping up to be quite the deal. According to CNET, the service will launch on November 12th with support for four simultaneous streams and 4K included, all for the base price of $6.99 a month. Subscribers will also be able to create and manage up to seven profiles on a single account.

That will make it highly competitive with Netflix, which raised its prices earlier this year and has in place stricter limitations on simultaneous streams. Netflix now costs $9 a month for a standard definition plan with only one available stream. If you want HD streaming, you need to pay $13 a month, and that gets you two simultaneous streams. For 4K and four simultaneous streams, it’s $16 a month. (The...

Disney+ confirms its Obi-Wan Kenobi series will begin shooting in 2020

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Ewan McGregor’s long-rumored Obi-Wan series is officially coming to Disney+, the company confirmed today.

McGregor was onstage at D23, the company’s biennial convention, to make the announcement. “It feels so nice to say,” McGregor said.

Disney and Lucasfilm originally planned a feature-length theatrical Star Wars spinoff, according to a Hollywood Reporter story from 2017. But after two Star Wars spinoff films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story, didn’t perform as well as Disney had hoped, the Obi-Wan side story was reportedly taken off the table. A third spinoff movie was planned (reportedly poised to focus on Boba Fett), but Disney and Lucasfilm decided to not move forward. The company ended up pushing back...

The first Mandalorian trailer brings a little Mad Max to Star Wars

Image: Lucasfilm

The first public trailer for Jon Favreau’s highly anticipated Star Wars series The Mandalorian has arrived, and it looks fantastic.

Although a similar trailer was shown at Star Wars Celebration, it was never made available to the public. The trailer opens with helmets on stakes, and ominous shots of people hanging out in the desert. Then it moves into Star Wars action — fighting spaceships, battling droids, and face-to-face confrontations. It certainly feels freakier than a traditional Star Wars movie, but it also feels extremely Star Wars.

The Mandalorian is one of the biggest launch titles coming to the new streaming service Disney+. It’s heavily inspired by fan-favorite character Boba Fett and his father, Jango. The new Mandalorian...

Here’s the first trailer for Disney’s live-action Lady and the Tramp remake

Disney unveiled the first look at its live-action adaptation of Lady and the Tramp today, featuring two adorable pups trying to make sense of a live-action world.

Lady and the Tramp is just another installment in Disney’s live-action remake blitz, following The Lion King, Aladdin, and Dumbo earlier this year. Unlike those three films, however, Lady and the Tramp won’t screen in theaters. It’s a Disney+ exclusive, meaning those who want to watch it will have to sign up for Disney’s streaming service.

It was originally set to be released in theaters, but Disney changed its strategy to encourage more people to sign up for Disney+. Lady and the Tramp is the studio’s first major release to get the treatment. It might be for the best,...

She-Hulk and Moon Knight are getting their own Disney+ shows

In addition to the freshly announced Ms. Marvel TV series, familiar Marvel characters She-Hulk and Moon Knight are heading to Disney+ to star in their own separate TV series, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced today at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California.

She-Hulk is Jennifer Walters, cousin of original Hulk Bruce Banner. After Walters received a blood transfusion from Banner, she accidentally took in some of his gamma poisoning and became an intelligent, controlled iteration of the Hulk. Moon Knight is about a mercenary named Mark Specter who was left for dead in the Egyptian desert. Marvel describes the character as a man “struggling with multiple personalities and amoral inclinations” who acts like a cloaked avenger.

Facebook is tightening its grip on Instagram

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

When Instagram first hit the news this week, it was over a hoax. A host of celebrities had posted to their timelines a battered image declaring that Instagram would soon make our deleted photos and messages public, and use them against us in court, unless we created a post to the contrary. It wasn’t true, of course, but it seemed true enough to some of our biggest stars — such as Beyoncé’s mother, and the man responsible for our nation’s nuclear arsenal.

The digital content industry debunked the copypasta, celebrities posted sheepish apologies (or didn’t), and we all resumed waiting for the next dumb thing to come along and briefly preoccupy us between stories about the burning rainforest in the Amazon and the president’s effort to buy...

Chicago police pilot Samsung DeX as replacement for bulky in-car computers

Image: Samsung

Police in Chicago’s West Side 11th district are piloting Samsung DeX as a replacement for their existing in-car computer systems, the Chicago Police Department and Samsung announced this week. Officers will have a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone which they can use to access dispatch alerts, notifications from gunshot detection systems, and real-time viewing and control of security cameras. Officers can then dock their phones in the car or police station to benefit from a larger screen and keyboard when entering collected evidence. All officers in Chicago’s 11th should be using the DeX system by the end of the year.

At a press conference announcing the initiative, Chicago Police Department Chief Jonathan Lewin said that the main benefit of the...

OnePlus says its TV will have a 55-inch QLED panel

OnePlus is continuing the dripfeed of information about its upcoming TV, following news of its September release date and the revelation that it’ll be called the OnePlus TV. Now we know the first technical details of the product, courtesy of a tweet from OnePlus India: it uses a 55-inch QLED panel.

Previous filings have suggested Android-based models of between 43 and 75 inches in size, with the 43-inch variant seemingly also bound for India. This announcement doesn’t necessarily rule any of that out, but it does at least confirm that India is getting a 55-inch version. The 75-inch model is likely to come to the US and China.

QLED is Samsung’s marketing term for quantum-dot LED screen technology — it’s nothing like OLED, despite the...

If you attack a robot, it might photograph you in the act

Image: Knightscope

Humans haven’t quite reached a WALL-E-like society where robots care for our every possible need, but we do have a few roving security robots that can monitor places like banks, casinos, malls, and hospitals so human security guards can catch a break. Some people don’t seem to like the new robot cops: earlier this month, a security robot captured video of an alleged attacker shortly before he bowled it over.

Here’s a video from Knightscope, which makes the robot that was attacked:

Knocking over one of these robots isn’t something you’d likely do by accident — Knightscope says it weighs 398 lbs. But most people shouldn’t worry about running into them at all, for now. Knightscope tells The Verge that there are only about 75 Knightscope...
