Panasonic’s Lumix S1H can shoot 6K video with a full-frame sensor

Panasonic’s Lumix mirrorless cameras are widely regarded as the best choice for anyone looking to create beautiful video within a mortal’s budget. The company is today pushing that reputation up into a higher price, quality, and resolution bracket with the announcement of $4,000 the Lumix S1H, a full-frame shooter capable of recording 6K video at 24fps. It’s a fresh iteration of the Lumix S1, which made its debut at Photokina last year and which I’ve recently tried and been delighted by.

The upcoming Lumix S1H, scheduled to launch in the fall, comes with the claim of being the world’s first full-frame camera to do 6K/24p at a 3:2 aspect ratio or 5.9K/30p at 16:9. Aside from being cool in its own right, this bump in resolution capability...

DJI’s most advanced drone yet comes with its own van and film crew

DJI is the leading name in drones, and we’ve liked their prosumer Phantom and Mavic lines quite a bit — but it looks like the company has also quietly built a professional cinematography drone that’s so high-end, it’s not even for sale. You’ll hire DJI to send out a fancy van with a dedicated team of professionals, presumably to fly the drone for you.

As DroneDJ notes, the DJI Storm was quietly revealed in a YouTube video that seems to have flown under the radar (so to speak), and we’ve confirmed it exists on DJI’s Chinese site as well. It sure sounds like a beast: an eight-rotor aircraft that can carry up to an 18.5kg (40.8lb) payload. That’s enough to carry an sizeable filmmaker’s rig like an Arri Alexa LF camera, complete with lens,...

US Justice Department is imminently preparing a Google antitrust investigation

Google may soon face an antitrust investigation from the US Department of Justice pertaining to its search business and potentially other aspects of the company’s sprawling software and services empire, according to a late Friday evening report from The Wall Street Journal. The DOJ is said to have spent the past few weeks preparing for the probe, which could be a broad evaluation of the company for antitrust violations across its entire business.

Citing anonymous sources, the WSJ says the Federal Trade Commission will defer to the DOJ here, following an FTC case against the company in 2011 related to the placement of tracking cookies in Apple’s Safari browser. That case was resolved a year later with a $22.5 million civil penalty...

Why specialization can be a downside in our ever-changing world

Popular wisdom drives home the importance of a head start and specializing early. Not so fast, advises journalist David Epstein.

After Epstein wrote about the famed 10,000-hour rule in his first book, The Sports Gene, he was invited to debate Malcolm Gladwell, whose book Outliers had brought the rule into the mainstream. To prepare for the debate, Epstein gathered studies that looked at the development of elite athletes and saw that the trend was not early specialization. Rather, in almost every sport there was a “sampling period” where athletes learned about their own abilities and interests. The athletes who delayed specialization were often better than their specialized peers, who plateaued at lower levels.

Epstein filed this...

Google, WhatsApp, and Apple slam GCHQ proposal to snoop on encrypted chats

A group of 47 companies including Apple, Google, Microsoft, and WhatsApp have strongly criticized a proposal by the UK intelligence agency GCHQ to eavesdrop on encrypted messages. In an open letter published on Lawfare the companies say that the plans would undermine security, threaten trust in encrypted messaging services, and ultimately endanger citizens’ right to privacy and free expression.

The proposal from GCHQ was first published last November as part of a series of essays, and does not necessarily reflect a legislative agenda from the intelligence agency at this point. In the essay, two senior British intelligence officials argue that law enforcement should be added as a “ghost” participant in every encrypted messaging...

Forget new research on Nazis — Twitter should just enforce its existing ban

From time to time, Twitter thinks about things. And then it goes on thinking about them for a very long time.

It thought about killing off third-party applications for six years, and when it finally decided to act, only went halfway through with it.

It thought about banning Alex Jones, and then decided not to, and then held a meeting where it debated the nature of “dehumanizing speech,” and then banned Alex Jones, and then asked users for their input.

It thought about changing “the core of how Twitter works,” and discussed this idea on podcasts for the better part of last summer, and then released a beta app that threads replies. (Presumably the core-rethinking continues.)

Anyway, today came the news that Twitter is thinking about...

MediaTek’s first 5G-enabled chipset will save battery life and space

MediaTek has unveiled the world’s first mobile chipset with an integrated 5G modem. The 7nm chipset combines the company’s Helio M70 5G modem with ARM’s recently announced Cortex-A77 and Mali-G77, resulting in an integrated chip that should save on physical space inside the phone and battery life. The chip’s modem has a theoretical maximum download speed of 4.7 Gbps and upload speed of 2.5 Gbps, MediaTek says.

Although it’s not as fast as Qualcomm’s second generation X55 modem, which offers peak download speeds of up to 7 Gbps, MediaTek’s approach has the advantage of combining everything into a single chip. By comparison, Qualcomm’s modem is separate to the company’s SoCs, meaning it occupies more space and may draw extra power...

Apple’s time-saving Apple Pay Express Transit feature is coming to London

While Express Transit works for Suica cards in Japan, TriMet in Portland, New York’s MTA (starting tomorrow), and Chinese transit cards in both Beijing and Shanghai, London is missing on the list for now. “We are having positive discussions with Apple about enabling express transit on...

Peak gamer bling achieved with Swarovski-encrusted WASD keys

I’ve seen a whole bunch of keyboards this week at Computex Taipei, but none quite so opulent as this exclusive offering from HyperX. As part of a collaboration with Swarovski, which it should be noted is far from a newcomer to the whole sticking-crystals-on-random-gadgets thing, the gaming accessory maker has designed a keyboard with bedazzled WASD and number keycaps.

I used the keyboard briefly and I don’t know if I’d say that the crystal glass felt particularly premium, but the jewel-encrusted keycaps did have a nice grip to them, if that’s what you’re into. If you wanted to experience an even greater rush of superiority after headshotting an opponent in Overwatch, I suppose this might do the job.

Disney CEO says filming in Georgia will be ‘very difficult’ if abortion ban goes into effect

Disney may stop filming movies and TV shows in Georgia if the state’s new controversial abortion law goes into effect, CEO Bob Iger told Reuters today.

Iger was asked by Reuters about the company’s plans to continue filming some of its biggest movies in Georgia following a ban on abortion that would prevent women from having the procedure done as soon as a doctor can find a fetus’ heartbeat. It’s a controversial ban — especially considering detecting a heartbeat can occur as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, when women may not even know they are pregnant.

Losing Disney would be a huge blow to Georgia’s annual tax credit revenue it receives from allowing studios to film in different locations. Disney is one of the most prominent of...

Justice Department reportedly wants T-Mobile and Sprint to create a new fourth US carrier to gain merger approval

One of the pressing concerns about the proposed merger between T-Mobile and Sprint is that it would shrink the market of major US wireless carriers from four down to three. But according to a report from Bloomberg tonight, the Department of Justice might be pushing for a way to prevent that: apparently, the DoJ wants to see T-Mobile and Sprint “lay the groundwork” for an entirely new carrier to emerge as a condition of any potential approval of their merger.

By the sounds of it, this would be a spun off mobile provider with its own network cobbled together from assets and spectrum that currently belong to T-Mobile and Sprint. Bloomberg doesn’t mention how receptive the two carriers are to this idea, nor does it detail how everything...

This is Ecobee’s new glass-covered smart thermostat

Gogo is developing a 5G network for planes

In-flight internet provider Gogo has announced plans to bring 5G to the North American skies starting in 2021. Gogo says the new 5G service is being designed to power faster in-flight Wi-Fi on smaller commercial airlines in the continental United States and Canada, those companies’ even smaller regional jets, and on business jets as well.

Gogo says it will essentially graft the 5G network onto the 250 towers the company currently leases to power its air-to-ground (ATG) service. Most Gogo-equipped commercial aircraft (on airlines like Delta) still predominately get their internet connections from these ground stations, to the tune of 1,881 out of 2,551 in North America at the end of 2018, according to the company’s most recent annual...

Another study finds teen suicide rates rose just after 13 Reasons Why debut

After the release of the controversial Netflix show 13 Reasons Why, scientists found a 13.3 percent increase in teenagers’ deaths from suicide. This is the second study released this month that found a rise in youth suicides around the time the show premiered. Mental health researchers are, as a result, more concerned than ever about how suicide is portrayed in the media — because suicide can be “contagious.”

About 94 more kids ages 10 to 19 died than expected during the period of this study, which was published this week in JAMA Psychiatry. Because there’s no way to tell whether the people who died by suicide during this time actually watched the show, the study “does not provide definitive proof” that 13 Reasons Why, which focuses on...

The US military is increasingly looking to use lasers on the battlefield, and a new report suggests that the Navy is planning to equip an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer with a HELIOS laser defense system in 2021.

The Navy’s director of surface warfare, Rear Admiral Ron Boxall, told Defense News that the service is planning to install the High Energy Laser and Integrated Optical-dazzler with Surveillance system on the USS Preble by 2021. It will replace an existing defensive platform called the Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) system, which was designed to intercept and destroy incoming missiles and other threats before they reach a ship.

The Navy began testing a precursor laser system, the AN/SEQ-3, back in 2013 as a proof-of-concept that...

Google’s Play Store starts requiring games with loot boxes to disclose their odds

Google now requires Play Store app developers to disclose the odds of receiving items in loot boxes, among several other changes aimed at making its app store more kid-friendly. This brings its policy in line with the Apple App Store, and it’s happening amid a larger discussion of how to regulate loot boxes — which critics describe as an addictive gambling system frequently aimed at children.

Android Police noted that new language had been added to Google’s rules about payments. “Apps offering mechanisms to receive randomized virtual items from a purchase (i.e. ‘loot boxes’) must clearly disclose the odds of receiving those items in advance of purchase,” it now says. Google is coming relatively late to the game here, since Apple changed...

Stop Filling Out Questionnaires for 'Personalized' Products

There are few things more satisfying than telling a story about yourself, and hearing it told back to you with validation and approval. That’s why horoscopes and Hogwarts house quizzes are so popular. And it’s often all that’s going on when you buy into a company’s pitch for “personalized” health or beauty products.

You can soon use a Fitbit to pay for a subway or bus ride in NYC

Fitbit’s contactless payment system, Fitbit Pay, is starting to expand transit payment support in the US. Starting on May 31st, Fitbit users with a Fitbit Pay-capable device can use it to pay for their rides on select buses and trains on the New York City MTA system.

Fitbit joins Apple and Google as payment systems that the MTA’s pilot program will accept. The program, called One Metro New York (OMNY), will be available first to buses servicing Staten Island and the 4 / 5 / 6 subway lines between Grand Central in Manhattan and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The MTA says it plans to extend support to cover the entire system by 2021. Those without a contactless payment wearable can also use apps on their smartphones to enter.

Apple’s latest defense of the App Store just shows how hard it is to compete with Apple

As it faces both an antitrust lawsuit with huge implications and a formal EU investigation over its App Store tactics, Apple is today publicly defending itself against Spotify and other critics of the company’s massively successful software storefront.

“Today, the App Store is more vibrant and innovative than ever, offering equal opportunities to developers to deliver their apps and services across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch,” reads a new page at Apple’s website titled “App Store — Principles and Practices.” “We’re proud of the store we’ve built and the way we’ve built it.”

Apple says it has paid out $120 billion to App Store developers worldwide since the platform launched, and the company again touts the quick...

What the Mac needs now is courage

This year at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple is widely expected to expand the program for bringing iPad apps to the Mac, a “multiyear” project it kicked off last year. The project is codenamed “Marzipan,” and this year, we’ll see exactly how it’ll work for developers. It’s expected to be much more ambitious than what we’ve seen before, and we may discover that these apps, built with iOS’s UIKit framework instead of the traditional MacOS AppKit framework, can be much more elegant and Mac-like than they are right now.

That’s because they can’t get much worse.

The current state of Marzipan apps has caused no small amount of consternation among many in the Mac community. It doesn’t take much to see why: just open up the...
