Starship Technologies, the maker of autonomous six-wheeled robots that carry groceries or even a hot meal straight to your home, is expanding into the world of package delivery.
The company announced on Wednesday that, starting now, residents of Milton Keynes in the UK can have their packages delivered by Starship’s little robots. The program will also roll out to the San Francisco Bay Area by the end of the year.
To do this, customers will have to direct their packages to a Starship sorting facility. Once there, customers can summon their package or schedule a delivery with a few taps in the company’s app. After that, one of Starship’s robots will trundle down the sidewalk with the package tucked away inside its frame. The robots can...

We’ve been through a lot in our October fitness challenge. We committed to doing some deadlifts, we psyched up and stretched out, we experimented with single-leg moves and unusual objects, and we learned how to get plates on and off the bar without a struggle. Now it’s time to settle up: what did you accomplish,…
One of my favorite parts of Halloween is having an excuse to scare the pants off people. It’s the time of year for ghosts, for creeping dread, and peering into the void. And what could possibly be better for horror than the future?
Seven of our reporters imagined the spookiest possible outcomes on their beats — the horrors of the future. Turn the lights off, and dial up the brightness of your screen. Maybe you’ll see it, just out of the corner of your eye: the fear that’s always lurking. The possibility that the bright future we’re trying to create will go dreadfully, immensely wrong, with very human consequences. Read these stories alone in the dark... if you dare.

Dear Salty Waitress, I work as a cashier at a medium-sized and family-owned grocery store. This is the first time in my life I have had this kind of job, and I got it after my wife got a job in the U.S. (We come from France.)
YouTube weirdo and mysterious musician Poppy and the artist formerly known as Grimes have been teasing a collaboration for months now, and finally, the end result is here: a bubblegum pop-metal mashup called “Play Destroy.” It makes sense when you listen to it.
In addition to threatening to burn down the local Walmart (very Grimes), the pair also sings about slicing up your face and breaking your toys. I have no idea why it took this duo so long to hook up.
Poppy’s newest album Am I a Girl? launches today.
Some of us love our group chats. Others of us hate them and would love nothing more than to leave them all. But why do we want to leave? Maybe you’ve had someone leave a group without giving you a reason as to why, and maybe it hurt a little bit. Vox.com’s Kaitlyn Tiffany and I are here to help you work through that pain with this episode of Why’d You Push That Button.
First, I chat with my friend Liz who tells us about her current and past group chat drama. She’s actually very undramatic and seems to tell it like it is. I like this about her. Then Kaitlyn interviews Maggie Lange, who has written for GQ about never leaving group chats, ever. She’s pro-mute. Kaitlyn and I then take all our concerns to Asha Sharma, director of product...
There’s a new scam in town to be wary of, according to the FTC: Calls asking for personal information purportedly sent from the Social Security Administration. But it’s not SSA, it’s a scammer.
It’s been a few years since the release of Undertale, an endearing role-playing game that made waves online for its charming writing, and the option to defeat enemies by talking to them. Today, creator Toby Fox has released a free follow-up on Undertale named Deltarune — a name that many are noting is an anagram of Undertale.
The premise of Deltarune is shrouded in mystery, but that seems intentional. The landing page for the game warns users that they are about to embark on something ominous, and similarly, the actual game talks about pain a whole lot near the start. While actual characters from Undertale immediately make an appearance, it seems that the whole thing has intentionally been released to celebrate Halloween.
After its...
Honor’s Magic 2 phone is finally official. The handset, which features a bezel-less screen that slides down to reveal a front-facing camera, was previously teased with a short trailer that showed it being used to drum out a beat on a table. (Honor has yet to confirm whether drumming damage will be covered under warranty.)
The main event here is the sliding design, which can be used to automatically open the camera app when the 16MP selfie camera is revealed. The design means that the 6.39-inch AMOLED display achieves a screen-to-body ratio of close to 100 percent, which is further helped by its use of an in-display fingerprint sensor. The selfie camera is joined by a 24MP triple-lens rear camera array. Internally, the phone has the same...
The testy relationship between Falcon and Winter Soldier is one of the most underrated aspects of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and Disney is reportedly looking to continue working on that relationship with a new limited series.
Both Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) will star in a limited series for Disney’s new streaming service, according to Variety. The limited series is expected to receive six to eight episodes, according to the report, but it’s unclear if Mackie and Stan will return to reprise their roles. It’s assumed they will, following an earlier Variety report suggesting that Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen would reprise their respective roles as Loki and Scarlet Witch for two limited series on...

Lawmakers are getting ready to take on data privacy, but the details of the bill are still up for grabs
Google and iRobot have announced they’re working together to improve smart home technology using mapping data collected by iRobot’s robot vacuums. The two companies say the aim is to make smart homes “more thoughtful” by leveraging the unique dataset collected by iRobot: maps of customers’ homes.
iRobot’s latest Roomba, the i7+, creates maps using a combination of odometry data (measuring how far the robovac’s wheels move) and low-res camera imagery. The resulting maps can be used to create custom cleaning schedules or to let users ask their Roomba to vacuum specific rooms. An integration with Google Assistant lets customers give verbal commands like, “OK Google, tell Roomba to clean the kitchen.”
Google and iRobot say this data will...
At yesterday’s Apple event, I saw a company returning to its finest form. Apple paid overdue attention to its stalwart MacBook Air and Mac mini, introduced a much leaner and more powerful iPad Pro, and fixed the design disaster that was the Apple Pencil’s charging. You don’t have to be an expert analyst to forecast bumper holiday sales for the Cupertino team.
In crafting its most compelling iPad and MacBook Air to date, Apple also created a major headache for people like me. I’m a member of that classic Intel ultrabook demographic whose computing needs are light, but constant. You won’t catch me doing 3D modeling or 4K video production on my laptop, but I do a litany of small tasks online, in a word processor, or in Adobe’s Lightroom....
If you’re the account owner on a Spotify Premium Family plan in the US, you can get a free Google Home Mini from the streaming service through the end of the year, Spotify announced today. Spotify has partnered with Google to give out the voice assistant to account owners on its family plan who sign up through the link here.
On the surface, it may seem like a nice holiday giveaway for Family plan users (and it is in some respects). But with the growth of Amazon Music largely on the back of the Echo and the rise of smart speakers, which may be in 50 percent of US homes before the end of the year, it’s also a strategic move for Spotify. YouTube Music and Google Play Music are still far from serious competition for Spotify, but Amazon’s...
TriggerPoint’s foam rollers are the most popular on the market, and Amazon’s rolling out deals on a bunch of them, today only. They hurt like hell to use, but you feel so much better when you’re done. Both ground rollers and handheld models are included in the sale, but these prices are only available today, or until…
As if October wasn’t already packed full of new product announcements, China’s Nubia is today hosting a launch event for its new flagship called the Nubia X. Leaked ahead of the big unveil, this device takes a pretty extreme approach to solving the notch problem: it puts a second display on the back, removing the entire need for a front-facing camera. We’re not talking e-paper displays like you had on the YotaPhone, this is a full-sized color screen, albeit with some fat bezels around it. So you can simply flip the phone around to its back to take your selfie with the main camera.
The most impressive thing about the Nubia X’s second display is the way it totally disappears when switched off. You can see a good demonstration of how that...
With iOS 12.1, Apple has brought its controversial “performance management feature” (aka, throttling) to the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X. This functionality dynamically throttles the phone’s processor as its battery degrades over time to stop the handset from randomly shutting down — it can be turned off if desired. Previously Apple has told US senators that “hardware updates” meant that the feature isn’t as necessary on its newest phones.
The company has always maintained that all of its products include “fundamental performance management” functionality to protect its components. A support page explaining the feature said the following about the iPhone 8 and later devices:
iPhone 8 and later use a more advanced hardware and...
The aftermath of a national emergency follows a now-familiar pattern. Various bad actors race to fill social platforms with misinformation and outright hate speech. Reporters perform simple searches for conspiracy theories and offensive keywords, and write up stories documenting what they find. Platforms belatedly issue contrite statements, saying there is no place for this kind of thing on their platforms, all evidence to the contrary.
Lather, rinse, retweet.
In the wake of last week’s domestic terror attacks, though, a new vector for bile has emerged. More than ever before, journalists are finding vast swaths of hate speech on Instagram. Yesterday, I mentioned this story from the New York Times that found nearly 12,000 posts with the...

We see a lot of deals around the web over on Kinja Deals, but these were our ten favorites today.
After the Civil War, the United States’ Constitution gained three amendments: the 13th outlawed involuntary servitude; the 14th granted citizenship to anyone born in the country, including former slaves; and the 15th outlawed racial discrimination in voting rights. Now, President Trump has said he believes he can…
At Apple’s big October event today, the Mac-maker announced revamped versions of three products, two of which haven’t received this kind of treatment in a long time. Apple has only made the slightest upgrades to the Macbook Air since it was last redesigned in 2013, and there hasn’t been a new Mac Mini since 2014.…
We are approaching that time of year when some car buyers start freaking out about the upcoming cold weather and decide they need a larger, “safer” family car. Usually, this involves some kind of SUV with all-wheel drive. But I’m here to tell you that too many buyers are looking at this “family car” thing all wrong.
Potatoes are somewhat notorious for not reheating well. Baked potatoes, french fries, and hash browns are their best selves straight out of the oven, fryer, or pan, and it’s quite tricky—some would say “impossible”—to return them to their former glory. Mashed potatoes, however, are an exception, which is extremely…
Life’s too short for slow, unreliable, and expensive-to-maintain inkjet printers. Monochrome laser printers are fast, their toner is cheap, and this Canon model’s only $40 after clipping the $30 coupon. We normally recommend Brother printers, but this is an inanely good deal, especially considering it has Wi-Fi built…
It may seem like our kids aren’t listening to us, but new research shows that in an emergency, a mom’s voice is more likely to wake children than a standard tone alarm.
Some of the most exciting new features on Google’s Pixel 3 and 3 XL smartphones are their new camera features, such as Night Sight (more accurate color- and lighting-enhancements for dark photos) and Top Shot, which helps pick the best photo among a burst of shots you’ve taken.

In case you haven’t already heard, midterm elections are next Tuesday, November 6th, and it is absolutely imperative that everyone who is able to vote, votes.
Apple’s second launch event this fall brought with it few surprises, with no talk of that long-awaited Mac Pro revamp, nor an overdue update on whatever the hell is happening with AirPower. But many of the rumors did pan out today as Apple breathed new life into its outdated Mac Mini and brought Face ID to the iPad Pro
You’ve done it. You’ve made it through all the Halloween festivities—the school party and parade, the costume going on and off and back on again, the trick-or-treating, the candy-consumption negotiations—without any major mishaps.
Apple just announced a suite of new computers—new iPad Pros, Mac Minis, and a new Macbook Air. (We’re very excited about that last one). All of these shiny chrome devices are coming soon, hitting stores next Wednesday, November 7. Conventional wisdom dictates waiting for reviews before picking up new gear, but maybe…
Apple released watchOS 5.1 earlier today, but has temporarily removed it from availability after users reported that their watches were rendered unusable by attempting to install the update. 9to5Mac’s Guilherme Rambo experienced the issue, as well as several MacRumors readers.
Serious issues with the Apple Watch can be more complicated to resolve than with iPhones or other devices, because there’s no way to plug the device into a computer and reinstall the software yourself. The only recourse tends to be contacting Apple for service. The issue seems limited to the brand new Apple Watch Series 4, too, which is likely to compound frustration for affected users.
watchOS 5.1 includes the 70-plus new emoji that came with iOS 12.1 today, as...
Facebook has started banning both individual accounts and pages, as well as associated groups, that are affiliated with the far-right extremist group the Proud Boys. The news was first reported today by Business Insider, which noted that members of the Proud Boys and adjacent online communities had begun complaining about the takedowns on Twitter.
The removals come in response to an act of violence in New York City earlier this month, in which members of the Proud Boys assaulted anti-fascist protestors outside a Republican club in Manhattan where Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes, also an original co-founder of Vice Media, was speaking. Facebook confirmed to The Verge that it was banning Proud Boys members and affiliated groups and pages...
An executive at Google parent company Alphabet’s X division has resigned after being named in a high-profile New York Times investigation into the company’s mishandling of sexual harassment claims, according to Axios. The executive, Rich DeVaul, held the title of “Director of Rapid Evaluation and Mad Science” at X, formerly known as Google X and the division responsible for Alphabet’s experimental “moonshots” projects like self-driving car unit Waymo and the Google Glass wearable headset. He did not receive an exit package of any sort, Axios reports.
The initial investigation primarily centered on Android co-founder Andy Rubin, who an employee accused of sexual assault in 2013. After Google investigated the claims and found them to be...
The world’s biggest search engine is getting into the Halloween spirit today with a special playable Google Doodle. While Google has busted out game Doodles in the past (including for Halloween 2016), this is the first time the information giant has made a multiplayer game that players can jump into with other people online. Think of it as the opposite of Slither.io.
The rules of Trick-or-Treat: The Great Ghoul Duel are simple. You play a cute apparition picking up “spirits” and bringing them back to your base for points. All non-deposited spirits will trail behind you, like a tail. The trick is that anybody who touches your tail can steal your unbanked spirits — but you can steal other people’s spirits, too. As you score points, spirits...
The era of Facebook’s nonstop growth has long since come to an end. Although the company is far from the point at which it might start to shrink, its growth in the US and Canada, as well as Europe, has stopped entirely and appears to occasionally decline.
In its 2018 third quarter earnings report out today, the social network confirmed that the number of daily active users in US and Canada has remained flat at 185 million, while the number of European users has slipped from 279 million to 278 million. The latter may be a direct result of recent European privacy regulations, namely GDPR, which initially caused Facebook to lose 1 million monthly active users after it went into effect in May.
Overall, the company continues to grow thanks...
Apple’s newest iPad Pro, announced today in New York, is one of the most expensive tablets the company has ever made. The cheapest option starts at $799 for the 64GB 11-inch iPad Pro, and it can run all the way up to a whopping $1,899 for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with LTE. That makes the new iPads also the most expensive to repair, if you’re out of warranty and don’t have AppleCare+, Apple’s extended warranty program.
Apple’s support page for iPad repairs lists the fees to repair each tablet if it’s out of warranty. AppleCare+, which costs $129 for a two-year iPad Pro warranty, covers two incidents of accidental damage. But if you let your complimentary limited warranty run out after 90 days, and you damage your new 12.9-inch iPad Pro...
Apple just updated its Shortcuts app, adding a weather integration, new measurement conversions, and better iCloud sharing, among other features. Now, Shortcuts lets you check upcoming weather forecasts with the “Get Current Weather” and “Get Weather Forecast” actions that are available for you to add to any custom shortcut.
You can also create an alarm, toggle an alarm, and start a timer. Previously, the app had some shortcuts that you could try to use as timers (like the Laundry Timer Shortcut, which was effectively a countdown clock). But now, you can make your own straightforward shortcuts with a direct timer. You can also measure and convert measurements, such as inches to centimeters, more conveniently. There’s a “Get Last Import”...

The holidays will be here soon, and for some, that means breaking out the “good” dishes. “Good” dishes are different in every household, but one thing is a constant: you do not want to break the “good” dishes, for doing so would cause much yelling and displeasure, and it’s best to limit those things during the…
A sale on Osprey luggage, an adjustable dumbbell set, and 30% off Coleman best sellers lead off Tuesday’s best deals from around the web.
Like it or not, Apple is removing the headphone jack from the new 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros. If you want to use a 3.5mm audio jack with one of the new models, then you will need one of Apple’s USB-C to 3.5mm dongles. That’’s right: the new iPad Pro moves from a Lightning cable to USB Type C.
Apple’s removal of the 3.5mm audio jack from the iPads wasn’t without warning. The company has been removing ports from its lineup for a while now. Apple removed the audio jack from the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus, then moved exclusively to USB-C on the MacBook Pro and Air lineups.
However, there’s a lot to be gained with the new iPad Pros, including thinner bezels, the iPhone XS’ gesture navigation, a new magnetically attached Apple Pencil, and...
Halloween is a dangerous time to be a pedestrian. Here in the United States, more people die from getting hit by a car on Halloween than on, say, your average Wednesday in October, new research says.
How many more pedestrians die on Halloween? About 43 percent more than on other, random, autumn nights, according to a study published today in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. That adds up to about four additional pedestrian deaths on October 31st every year. The increase is a tragedy, and signals to experts that we need better traffic infrastructure to keep pedestrians safe.
Sadly, some of the things that make the holiday delightful also make it dangerous. The evenings get dark earlier, creating a spooky vibe, but also reducing visibility on...
Apple announced an updated version of its Pencil at its iPad Pro and MacBook event today, and although it keeps much of the original specs of the original stylus it released in 2015, it still features some updates made specifically for the new iPad Pro. With the new iPad Pros switching to USB-C ports, it makes sense for Apple to release another Pencil that uses a new charging method.
The Apple Pencil 2 now charges wirelessly via a magnetic attachment that clips to the side of the tablet, and lets it automatically pair. It’s a way better solution than the previous charging method, which was a precarious situation that required plugging the pencil into the iPad’s lightning port. The design is more minimalistic than before, with the silver...
Apple’s just-announced iPad Pros are making the switch to USB-C, and with that switch comes a nifty new feature: you’ll actually be able to use your iPad to charge up your iPhone on the go, making it the world’s most expensive battery pack.
Just plug in your iPhone (or, presumably, any other device that you want to charge up) into the iPad’s USB-C port, and you’ll be able to charge it up. Apple hasn’t said yet what kind of power that iPad will be able to push — you probably won’t be able to charge up another iPad Pro or a Mac, for instance — but if you’re out and about and need some extra juice for your phone, it’s a neat option to have.
Of course, you’ll still need to buy a USB-C to Lightning cable for an extra $19.99, since Apple s...
The pair of headphones that most people discover when they decide to upgrade to a higher-fidelity sound than their old Beats is the Audio-Technica M50x. Originally designed for professional use, these headphones started life in 2007 as the M50 model that had a fixed cable, evolved into the M50x in 2014 with a removable cable, and today blossom into the M50xBT that requires no cable at all. The look, design, and sound signature have barely changed in all that time, and Audio-Technica promises that the new wireless M50xBT will maintain everything familiar and beloved about the existing M50 lineage.
Developed by the same two engineers as the original M50s, the M50xBT have been built with wireless performance as the priority — so much so...
If you live on the east coast, the west coast, or in any of those big square states, you almost certainly did not see a deadly brown recluse in your basement that one time. If you know somebody who was bitten by one, there’s a good chance they weren’t. Even within the recluse’s territory, chances are still low.
