The Internet Archive’s VHS Vault will send you on a 90s nostalgia trip

The Internet Archive, perhaps best known for the extremely handy Wayback Machine you can use to find older versions of webpages, also has free movies, books, software, and music. Yet a little known part of the organization’s media trove includes uploaded recordings from VHS tapes, as I learned today thanks to this Vice article. They live on The VHS Vault, and as of this writing, there are more than 20,000 recordings you can peruse.

A lot of the recordings are from the 90s, which is when I was a kid, so I’ve found a lot of stuff that has given me all sorts of nostalgic feels. Take, for example, this collection of Nickelodeon commercial breaks recorded in April 1998:

R/nosleep, which hosts an array of short stories and other horror-related writing, is in the top 50 most popular subreddits, with nearly 14 million subscribers, according to the website Reddit Metrics. Spin, the dockless electric scooter company purchased by Ford in 2018, is expanding beyond the US. TechCrunch reports that the company is launching its electric scooter rental service in Cologne, Germany this Spring, with launches in other German cities planned to follow. Until now Spin has operated exclusively in the USA. Its website says that it currently operates in 62 cities and 20 campuses across the country.

The scooter sharing company will face stiff competition when it launches in Germany. In Cologne alone, TechCrunch notes that Spin will be competing against three other ride-sharing companies; Bird, Lime, and Circ. As of last December, there were seven micromobility startups operating in cities around the country.

Google is opening up its web-based version of Earth to browsers like Firefox, Edge, and Opera today. The search giant originally launched Google Earth on the web back in 2017, and axed its desktop apps at the same time. Google says “we are big supporters of open web standards,” but Earth launched on the web with Chrome-only Native Client (NaCl) technology as there wasn’t a standard available to support what it wanted to do. This resulted in Earth becoming one of the first of many Chrome-only sites from Google.

A Californian has contracted coronavirus from an unknown source

A person in California has been diagnosed with the new coronavirus, despite having not having any “relevant travel history” or exposure to someone who was known to have the illness, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an emailed statement today.

This may be the first instance of “community spread,” which is a term the public health community uses to say the source of the illness is unknown, the CDC said in its release. It’s also possible that the patient was exposed to a person who’d traveled, and didn’t realize they were infected. The Washington Post reported this person was in Northern California.

Etsy tells sellers it’s going to advertise their goods and take a big cut of the sale

Etsy is going to start automatically advertising its sellers’ products and taking a fee — at least 12 percent — for every sale it refers. The ads will appear on “high-traffic sites” like Google, Facebook, and Pinterest, and they’ll be a requirement for shops doing more than $10,000 in sales each year. The change means a potentially big disruption for sellers that could lead to higher prices.

Facebook is banning ads that promise to cure, prevent, or otherwise incite panic around COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, the company has confirmed in a statement given to Business Insider. The company added that it has similar policies for its Marketplace platform where Facebook users can buy and sell items.

”We recently implemented a policy to prohibit ads that refer to the coronavirus and create a sense of urgency, like implying a limited supply, or guaranteeing a cure or prevention,” the company told Business Insider, “We also have policies for surfaces like Marketplace that prohibit similar behavior.”

Toyota steers $400 million to self-driving startup Pony.ai

Pony.ai, a self-driving startup based in Silicon Valley and Guangzhou, China, is deepening its ties to Toyota. The two companies announced a pilot program to test self-driving cars on public roads in two Chinese cities, Beijing and Shanghai. The Japanese auto giant plans to invest $400 million in Pony.ai, valuing the startup at $3 billion.

Pony.ai has been working with Toyota since 2019 on public autonomous vehicle testing. With this new investment, their relationship will become even closer, with the automaker and the startup “co-developing” mobility products like “mobility services.”

Slickwraps apologizes to customers after comically bad data breach

Slickwraps, which makes vinyl skins for phones, tablets, and other electronics, announced last week that it suffered a data breach. The announcement came after many customers received an email from Slickwraps that appeared to be sent by a hacker claiming to have stolen customer data.

What’s unusual about this case is how the hacker apparently breached Slickwraps’ systems: not by discovering the vulnerability on their own, but by reading a now-deleted Medium post from an anonymous fellow hacker. The takeaway is that Slickwraps may have had comically bad security, leaving it both wide open to breaches like this and flat-footed when it came to responding to any concerns brought to its attention.

The trend of gadgets that rethink the physical ways we make music is continuing with a little wearable device called Music Fingers. It literally puts music at your fingertips, and lets you tap out beats on any surface.

It’s a clip-like device that’s goes on your finger, and sort of looks like any pulse reader you’d see in a hospital. The clip then connects to the Music Fingers app on your smartphone via Bluetooth, where sounds or loops can be assigned to the clip’s two buttons. Once that’s done, start playing by tapping away.

It’s just one example of a weirdo gadget for making beats — and there have been a lot of attempts at making these kinds of gadgets. There’s Oddball, which is an actual bouncy ball that’s also a drum machine....

The store opens today in Seattle’s Capitol Hill district, confirming reports from last year that Amazon was developing a more ambitious version of its cashier-less Go model. Disney Plus announces preorder discounts for Europe

Disney is discounting the price of a yearly subscription to its streaming service in Europe, ahead of its regional launch on March 24th. Customers who subscribe before March 23rd will get £10, or €10, off the price of a year’s subscription, bringing the annual cost down to £49.99 or €59.99. The promotion does not apply in the Netherlands, where the service already went live.

At £49.99 a year, the price works out to around £4/€5 a month, which compares to £5.99/€6.99 a month at its usual pricing (monthly subscriptions are not receiving a similar pre-release discount). In the US, the service offered a similar reduction, while also partnering with Verizon to give out a year of the service for free with certain plans.

Vivo’s Apex 2020 concept phone is coming on Friday

Vivo’s plan to unveil its third Apex concept phone were derailed by the cancellation of Mobile World Congress, but it looks like we’ll find out about it this week anyway. The company says it’s going to announce the Apex 2020 on Friday and has supplied The Verge with a image teasing its “fullview edge display.”

The render shows a phone screen with dramatically curved edges and the number “120” running from top to bottom. This could be a reference to the curvature of the glass; Vivo’s impressive Nex 3 flagship from last year had a “waterfall display” with 88-degree curved edges. Or it could refer to the refresh rate, though that wouldn’t exactly be groundbreaking. Or hey, maybe it’s both.

Realme is continuing its push into the high end today with the announcement of the Realme X50 Pro, its first 5G phone and one that the company will push as a legitimate flagship contender in more markets than ever before. It was intended for reveal at Mobile World Congress this week in an attempt to make a global splash; Realme is going forward with the announcement despite the event’s cancellation.

The X50 Pro is a pretty hefty phone at 207g and 9.36mm thick, and its design doesn’t do much to step beyond other devices from the company. The colorway on the device you see here, though, is pretty cool — Realme calls it “Rust Red”, and it’s kind of like a copper-brown frosted-glass matte finish on the back. An email that appeared to come from Ukraine’s ministry of health containing false information about coronavirus cases in the country led to a number of violent protests and standoffs with police, reports BuzzFeed News.

The email originated from outside Ukraine, according to a government statement, and it falsely claimed there were five cases of coronavirus in the country. In reality, there have been zero reported cases of the virus in Ukraine. But the email was sent the same day evacuees from China landed in the country, and some Ukranian residents protested the evacuees’ arrival by blocking roads that led to medical facilities and, in some cases, by smashing the windows of the buses carrying those evacuees.

Google addresses Huawei ban and warns customers not to sideload apps like Gmail and YouTube

Google on Friday evening published a support article meant to clarify the ongoing situation with Huawei. Last year, the United States government barred companies in the US from working with the Chinese hardware maker. “Google is prohibited from working with Huawei on new device models or providing Google’s apps including Gmail, Maps, YouTube, the Play Store and others for preload or download on these devices,” Tristan Ostrowski, legal director for Android and Google Play, wrote in the post, which was picked up by 9to5Google.

According to Google, there’s still plenty of confusion around what’s going on — and exactly which products are subject to the Google services ban.

Preparation work for Tesla’s Gigafactory near Berlin can continue, less than a week after work had to be paused due to concerns raised by local environmental activists, Bloomberg reports. Yesterday, a court ruled that local authorities hadn’t sidestepped regulations in allowing Tesla’s tree felling work to begin. The electric car company is currently in the process of clearing 92 hectares of forest in Gruenheide, east of Berlin, in preparation for the construction of its first European Gigafactory.

Any delay could have had a big impact on Tesla’s schedule for the factory, since the breeding period for local wildlife begins next month. The region’s economy minister has argued that the forest needs to be cleared by mid-March, otherwise...
