Logan Paul is ending his daily vlogs

Logan Paul announced in a 16-minute vlog over the weekend that he is ending regular updates on his popular daily vlogging channel, which launched less than two years ago and currently has over 17 million subscribers.

According to the video, Paul is abandoning the daily model because he “wants to exercise his creativity in different ways... If anyone is going to end my career, okay, it’s going to be me,” he added. He then launched into a 10-minute segment in which he and his friends pick up his $150,000-plus custom Mercedes SUV.

The move comes after widespread criticism of Paul for his insensitivity and poor behavior in multiple incidents, including a vlog from late December where he filmed the body of an apparent suicide victim in a...

Everything coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Now in May

Summer movie season kicked off early this year with the release of Avengers: Infinity War, but in spite of its history-making performance at the box office, audiences no doubt have an appetite for things other than Marvel superheroes. Fortunately, May will bring a lot of new alternative options to television screens.

Netflix is adding several films and TV shows to its original content lineup, including the zombie movie Cargo on May 18th, the Amanda Seyfried and Clive Owen science fiction film Anon on May 10th, and the fourth season of the comedy series stalwart Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on the 30th. The second season of Dear White People is premiering on May 4th. And for viewers interested in timely comedy programming: former Daily Show...

T-Mobile says it has seven major competitors, which is complete nonsense

One of the big issues T-Mobile will have to fight back against if it wants to successfully merge with Sprint is market consolidation. If the two companies merge, the US will go from four major wireless service providers to three, therefore reducing competition. Given how aggressive (and successful) T-Mobile has been over the last several years — ever since its proposed merger with AT&T failed — you can see why this might be an issue.

But if you ask T-Mobile, that isn’t what’s happening at all. In its merger announcement, T-Mobile directly addresses the competition issue by arguing that, in fact, there are currently “at least seven or eight big competitors” in its industry. Sorry, what?

Conventional wisdom, as well as facts and history,...

Oculus is developing an immersive theater VR experience with real actors

Oculus VR is developing an immersive theater experience to debut next year that will feature real-world actors who perform in virtual reality using motion capture. The experience is being billed as indie game Journey meets interactive theater show Sleep No More, according to Yelena Rachitsky, an executive producer of experiences at Oculus who detailed the project in an interview with CNET.

The central idea is to use trained actors who perform live while viewers interact with them from the comfort of their homes, with everyone using Oculus Rift headsets to enter into and experience the shared world. Oculus hopes that blending the benefits of immersive theater with the unique experimental benefits only VR can provide might be a winning...

What a combined T-Mobile and Sprint would look like

After two earlier attempts failed to materialize, T-Mobile and Sprint announced on Sunday that they’ve reached a $26.5 billion merger agreement. If approved, it would combine the third and fourth largest carriers in the United States. The new business would instantly become a much more formidable rival to Verizon and AT&T. Both companies claim that a successful merger would make the United States a leader in the formative early years of 5G mobile networks. But there are very legitimate concerns that shrinking the field of wireless competitors could end up hurting consumers and raising prices.

The deal must be cleared by regulators, including both the Federal Communications Commission and Justice Department, which is no small hurdle. FCC...

Bill Gates told Trump that being his science adviser is ‘not a good use of my time’

Trump still hasn’t appointed a science adviser — but he did offer the job to Bill Gates, who said it was “not a good use of my time.”

At a meeting between the president and Microsoft founder last month, Gates suggested to Trump that he actually appoint someone to lead the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. At this point, Gates told STAT, Trump asked Gates if he himself wanted the job. Gates did not.

Gates isn’t a scientist himself, but he is sort of... science-adjacent? His Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funds projects working on issues such as climate change and infectious disease. Trump has taken longer to fill the science adviser position than any other modern president, and so the de facto leader of the OSTP is a...

LG’s G7 ThinQ will feature a Boombox Speaker that doubles the bass

LG Boombox Speaker

LG’s next flagship smartphone, the G7 ThinQ, is debuting in just a couple days, and another teaser has been dropped. Speaking with Engadget, LG says that the phone will have a Boombox Speaker that “increases the base sound level by more than 6dB with twice the amount of bass.”

According to LG, the Boombox Speaker will use a resonance chamber within the phone, which supposedly has more than 10 times the resonance space found in traditional smartphones. Additionally, bass can be further amplified by placing the phone on a solid surface, using the resulting surface vibrations to deliver sound.

There’s more audio news with the G7 ThinQ. The phone will come with a Hi-Fi Quad DAC like previous LG models, which allows for things like digital...

Chinese authorities admit they’re able to retrieve deleted WeChat messages

Chinese authorities are able to retrieve deleted WeChat messages from a suspect’s phone to catch criminals, a government watchdog admitted on Monday in social media posts spotted by South China Morning Post. The stunning admission confirms what many have believed for years: WeChat can be used as a government surveillance tool, and even once-deleted messages can be retrieved by authorities.

WeChat’s parent company Tencent denied any wrongdoing, saying in a social media post, “WeChat does not store any chat histories — they are only stored on users’ phones and computers.” That stance is similar to one Tencent has taken in the past, when Chinese auto industry executive Li Shufu stated that the company’s CEO “must be watching all our...

Adi Shankar has an idea to help The Simpsons deal with the criticism surrounding Apu. The Castlevania producer just launched a screenwriting competition that asks competitors to write a new Simpsons episode centered around Apu in a way that “subverts him, pivots him, intelligently writes him out, or evolves him in a way that takes a mean spirited mockery and transforms him into a kernel of truth wrapped in funny insight aka actual satire.”

The contest, called “Crowdsourcing the cure for The Simpsons,” is free and open to anyone, but Shankar asks some writers to consider whether they’re the best people to address the controversy. “If you don’t have any experience with Indian culture in America then you may not have the perspective and...

First person convicted under Malaysia’s fake news law gets month in jail

The first person has been charged and found guilty under Malaysia’s Anti-Fake News Act, less than a month after it was passed into law, as reported by Gizmodo.

Malaysia’s inspector general of police, Mohamad Fuzi Harun, says the response time was eight minutes.

The charge against Sulaiman stated he “with ill intent, published fake news through a video on YouTube.” At the hearing, he pleaded guilty and apologized, stating he posted the YouTube video in a “moment of anger.” “I agreed I made a mistake,” he said....

Please don’t use this study to justify your horrible habit of using two spaces after periods

Is it better to have one or two spaces after a period? The first study investigating this hotly contested issue is here, and it supposedly gives the win to the two-spacers. But a closer look at the research suggests that the only reasonable interpretation is that double spacing after a period remains bad. It’s ugly, it doesn’t help when it comes to what matters most (reading comprehension), and the experiment that supports its benefits used an outdated font style.

The “two-space” convention is left over from the days of typewriters. Typewriters allot the same amount of space for every character, so a narrow character like “i” gets as much as a wider character like “w.” (This is called a “monospaced font.”) With a typewriter, it makes...

Turkey marks one year without Wikipedia

When the Turkish government suddenly banned Wikipedia in late April last year, it came as little surprise to many people in the country. Access to platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and WhatsApp have been periodically restricted in Turkey numerous times since 2014, particularly after tumultuous events like mass demonstrations, suicide bomb attacks, or the failed coup attempt in July 2016. What’s strange is that the ban stayed. As of this Sunday, Wikipedia has been blocked in the country for a full year.

Authorities said the ban was instituted when Wikipedia declined to take down content alleging that Turkey had provided support for terrorist groups. Since the ban, all language versions of the site have been...

The original emoji were designed by Shigetaka Kurita for Japanese telecommunications company DoCoMo in 1999 to use on pages in Japan. Those small, pixelated 12-by-12 grid images only bear a passing resemblance to today’s far more detailed emoji, but there’s a clear line that can be drawn between Kurita’s early work and the thousands of emoji characters on our phones. Kurita has been involved in the project; Reed and Smyth flew out to Tokyo to interview him for additional context on the original designs, and he’ll also be contributing an introduction...

Windows 10 April 2018 Update: the 10 best new features

Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 update is arriving for PCs and tablets today. Like the previous Fall Creators Update, it’s full of small features that improve Windows 10. Microsoft is only adding one major feature with this update, and it’s the Timeline feature that lets you resume where you left off across multiple Windows 10 machines.

Elsewhere there’s easy sharing, quick Bluetooth pairing, a dictation feature, and the ability to mute tabs in Microsoft Edge. Microsoft is also continuing to tweak and improve the Fluent Design system it introduced with the Fall Creators Update. You’ll notice more hover effects when you’re using your mouse in the Start menu or notification center, and there’s a new blur effect on the taskbar. I’ve been...

TCL’s new budget-friendly 6-Series 4K HDR TVs start from $650

If you’re looking for a 4K TV on the cheap, TCL has been a good bet for a few years. The company’s P-Series had some of the best budget sets for 2017, and for 2018, TCL is updating this range with a new line that it’s calling the 6-Series. These were first announced earlier this year, and now we know the prices: the 55-inch model is $649.99 (model 55R617), while the 65-inch model (model 65R617) is $999.99. If they’re as good as their predecessors, these will be some very desirable TVs.

The 6-Series sets feature Dolby Vision HDR and contrast control zones, which optimize the contrast of the image (in up to 120 different zones in the 65-inch and 96 zones in the 55-inch). As with last year’s P-Series, these 6-Series sets also come with...

Westworld’s latest episode reveals what the park was really built for

HBO’s science fiction drama Westworld isn’t just known for its talented cast and philosophical musings about the nature of reality. It’s also become famous for its reveals, from mind-bending bombshells that link two characters to simple pieces of backstory that bring new insight to a storyline. Watching Westworld is like peeling an onion one layer at a time.

That’s why for the show’s second season, I’ll be diving into one particular spoilery revelation from each episode to figure out what it means, how we got here, and where things might go in the episodes to come. Some weeks, it might be a huge plot twist; other weeks, it might be something subtle. Either way, we’re going to spoil the hell out of it. Welcome to the Westworld Spoilers...

Wildlife photographer of the year disqualified for using a stuffed animal

The disqualified photo.

Judges of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year have disqualified a winning contestant after the anteater in his prize-winning photograph was judged “highly likely” to be a taxidermy specimen. Called “The Night Rider,” the image was taken by photographer Marcio Cabral and depicts an anteater underneath starry skies next to a hill dotted with glowing bioluminescence. A team of five scientists all judged the work to be a fake, a conclusion Cabral strongly denies.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is run by the Natural History Museum in London, and Cabral’s photo won the category for Animals in their Environment in 2017. The NHM started an investigation into the photo after it was contacted in March by anonymous...

Shure makes its superb electrostatic earphones a touch more affordable at $1,999

Shure KSE1200.

A year ago, I reviewed the $2,999 Shure KSE1500 earphones and declared them an outstanding technological feat with a sound that’s basically impossible to obtain anywhere else. Well, there’s now a more attainable version of the same, with Shure announcing the $1,999 KSE1200, which eschew the digital signal processor (DSP) and ship only with an accompanying amplifier. That allows the company to slice a third off the original audiophile earphones’ price while still retaining the claim to best-in-class fame.

The truth is that Shure’s electrostatic earphones win the prize of best in their class by default: no one else is doing anything as ambitious as this. The KSE1500s were an entire personal music listening system — one where you plugged in...

Dutch police have shut down Anon-IB in the course of a revenge porn investigation

Last week, Dutch Police seized the servers for anonymous image board Anon-IB, after a year-long investigation. The image board has been notorious for its use as a repository for revenge porn, as well as well-trafficked threads from users that identified the women in the images.

Anon-IB was a free, anonymous message board that allowed users to post images, and was organized by location and subject. It was part of an online ecosystem where users traded images back and forth like trading cards.

This particular investigation began in March 2017 after a woman discovered that some of her personal images had been stolen and posted online. She made a complaint to authorities, and the subsequent investigation led officers to a 31-year-old...

When the Cost of Giving Birth Is Billed to Your Baby

Shortly after my story was published, Reyhan Harmanci, an editor over at Topic, mentioned that she was billed a little over $6,000 for services rendered during her hospital stay. The bills were in her recently delivered infant’s name:
