Huawei promises its Kirin 980 processor will destroy the Snapdragon 845

<em>The Kirin 980 system-on-a-chip.</em>

At IFA today, Huawei announced its newest system-on-a-chip, the Kirin 980, which boasts a number of world firsts. It’s the first 7nm mobile processor, the first one built around ARM’s Cortex-A76 CPU and Mali-G76 GPU, the first with a Cat.21 smartphone modem supporting speeds up to 1.4Gbps, and the first chip to support 2,133MHz LPDDR4X RAM. The Kirin 980 has 6.9 billion transistors, but I’ve seen it for myself and it’s no larger than a thumbnail.

The road to today’s announcement started three years ago for Huawei, with the company engaging more than 1,000 senior semiconductor design experts and churning through more than 5,000 engineering prototypes. The end result is roughly a 20 percent speed improvement and a 40 percent reduction in...

Huawei’s AI Cube is a 4G router and Alexa speaker, not a cube

The Huawei AI Cube is not a cube. I just really want us to get that fact agreed upon before we proceed any further. It is, however, a rather unique device, combining a 4G modem, a home Wi-Fi router, a high-end 360-degree wireless speaker, and a Huawei-Amazon collaboration that promises Alexa integration and some not-yet-articulated AI capabilities.

Shaped like an elongated Google Home with a flat top, the Huawei AI Cube is an effort to get Huawei in on the flourishing smart speaker business. As of today, there are probably more consumer electronics brands with a smart speaker in their portfolio — Apple’s HomePod, the Google Home family of devices, Amazon’s Echo speakers, Lenovo’s Smart Display, and most recently, Samsung’s Bixby speaker...

Wireless headphones are improving faster than anything else in tech

<em>Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC.</em>

If you’re in the market for new wireless headphones, IFA 2018 has been an absolute treat for you. If, on the other hand, you just bought a pair, well... this is going to be an upsetting read. At this year’s IFA in Berlin, headphones manufacturers brought out a litany of meaningful, tangible, delightful improvements that have made the wireless audio market much more exciting than it was just a few days ago. Let’s take each new change in turn.

USB-C is the new charging standard

Anyone who’s been following my writing will know that I think this change is overdue. For months, I’ve been imploring headphone makers to get with the times — a majority of smartphones and laptops now charge via USB-C — but most of them kept updating their flagship...

Beyerdynamic’s new wireless headphones put the LED lights where they belong: on the inside

<em>Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC.</em>

The Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC headphones come with a neat lighting trick: instead of having exterior LEDs spoiling their aesthetic, they have internal lights to inform the user of their status. It’s such a simple switch in thinking, executed with a smidgen of flair, yet its effect is profound. When you think about it, the only time you want to see a status light on your headphones is when they’re off your head, and you probably want to see that light without ambiguity. So Beyerdynamic has done what’s obvious in hindsight by illuminating the inner periphery of the cups with informative colors.

When you first pick up a Lagoon pair that’s already on, the left ear cup will glow blue and the right one will glow red — because that’s when you’ll...

A conservative Facebook would probably fail — but Facebook should worry about it anyway

In the days after the 2016 election, Gizmodo published a much-discussed story that predicted our current moment. The story, written by Michael F. Nuñez, alleged that Facebook had built a tool to reduce the spread of fake news — and then abandoned the tool over fears it would disproportionately affect right-wing news sites. Nuñez reported that Facebook had undertaken a high-level overview of its products in an effort to identify ways in which they might be biased against conservatives.

Facebook denied most of the substance of the story. But subsequent reporting reporting did find concerns within the company that right-wing users might someday turn on the service en masse. (See the now-famous May 2016 meeting between Zuckerberg and 16...

Apple blocks its gay pride watch face in Russia

Apple’s pride watch face

Apple first introduced its pride Apple Watch face during the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. Inspired by the rainbow flag, it’s designed to celebrate gay pride and stand against discrimination to LGBTQ people. While Apple regularly touts its “unwavering commitment to equality and diversity” in highly-produced gay pride videos, the company has its limits. iOS developer Guilherme Rambo has discovered that the pride Apple Watch face is “hardcoded to not show up if the paired iPhone is using the Russian locale.”

Reddit users and Apple support forum users have been questioning the lack of a pride watch face in Russia over the past couple of months. The Verge has tested this on an iPhone running the latest iOS 12...

AptX Adaptive is Qualcomm’s latest solution to bad Bluetooth audio

Headphones

If you stream music from an Android phone to a pair of wireless headphones, there’s a very good chance your devices are relying on a compression algorithm known as AptX, which is supposed to squeeze high-quality sound into the limited bandwidth provided by a Bluetooth connection. But existing AptX options have their limits, so Qualcomm — the company behind AptX since 2015 — is introducing a new version that’s supposed to grow and contract the size of audio data to meet the demands of whatever and wherever you’re actually streaming.

The new version of AptX is called AptX Adaptive, and its key feature is the ability to compress audio at a variable bitrate. That means if you’re in an environment with a lot of competing wireless signals,...

Trump says Amazon, Facebook, and Google represent a ‘very antitrust situation’

President Donald Trump continued his war of words against technology companies for a third day in a row, this time telling Bloomberg News in an Oval Office interview this afternoon that he sees the power and influence of companies like Amazon, Facebook, and Google as a “very antitrust situation.” Trump began his heightened criticism of Silicon Valley starting on Tuesday by criticizing Google for alleged skewing of search results in favor of left-wing media organizations, after watching a related Fox News segment that cited deeply flawed study results.

“I won’t comment on the breaking up, of whether it’s that or Amazon or Facebook,” Trump said, replying to a question on whether tech companies like Facebook and Google should be regulated...

Slack quietly adds auto-expiring statuses

Workplace chat and collaboration company Slack has quietly updated its status feature to include an expiration date, so you can set certain statuses like commuting, meetings, and vacation to expire after a distinct amount of time. Restarting Slack on mobile or desktop should pull up the new feature for all users, and it looks like the company updated its help center page for statuses yesterday to include information about the new change.

Now, when you pull up the status screen, you’ll get the same default statuses with pre-filled expiration times, including one hour for “in a meeting,” 30 minutes for “commuting,” and an unspecified length of time for “vacationing,” which is a nice touch. If you’d like more granular control, you can...

Google reportedly bought Mastercard data to link online ads with offline purchases

If you’re a Mastercard holder in the US, Google has reportedly been tracking whether your buying habits are influenced by online ads in your offline purchases for the past year. The secret deal between the two companies was brokered after four years of negotiation, according to a Bloomberg report published today.

Neither Google nor Mastercard have publicly announced the partnership, and neither company let its customers know that their offline purchases made in stores are being tracked through Mastercard purchase histories and correlated with online ad interactions. Both Google and Mastercard say that the data is anonymized in order to protect personally identifiable information.

Google reportedly paid Mastercard millions of dollars for...

Hello Kitty has no mouth, and she must vlog

Hello Kitty is a lot of things: a British schoolgirl, definitely not a cat, Japan’s tourism ambassador, and now, YouTube vlogger. She put out her first video yesterday, and in it, she speaks honestly from the heart. It’s actually the only place she can speak from because she has no mouth.

Hello Kitty starts off by saying how she Googles herself sometimes and sees haters commenting that “she’ll do anything,” when actually, she just has a wide variety of interests. Vlogging just happens to be one of them. Initially, the head honchos at Sanrio were skeptical. They warned her that “the internet is a scary place,” and not, “Hello Kitty, you have no mouth and cannot speak.” Despite the odds stacked against her, she stands before us now in a...

This is Google’s no-notch Pixel 3 smartphone

Well, it was bound to happen. After several consecutive weeks of leaks spilled nearly every detail about its larger Pixel 3 XL counterpart, the first real-world photos of Google’s Pixel 3 have been posted to the Pixel subreddit and republished by 9to5Google. And just as we’d anticipated, the front of the phone looks like a mini Pixel 2 XL; there’s no notch to be seen on this one. The photos also confirm stereo front-facing speakers, dual selfie cameras, and the same rear, all-glass design as the 3 XL (with a matte coating covering a good portion of it).

Today’s leak reveals the 5.5-inch display will have a resolution of 2160x1080 and 2:1 aspect ratio. The battery capacity is said to be 2,915mAh. According to screenshots that came from...

Another one of Jennifer Lawrence’s hackers is going to prison

George Garofano — one of the four hackers who stole and leaked celebrity nudes in the 2014 event that came to be known as Celebgate (and on 4chan as “The Fappening”) — has been sentenced to eight months of prison time. Variety reports, he’ll also face three years of supervised release and 60 hours of community service after he gets out. In total, Garofano hacked more than 250 people, including Kate Upton, Jennifer Lawrence, and Kirsten Dunst.

Three other hackers had already been sentenced for their roles in hacking the material that became Celebgate: Ryan Collins, 36, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to felony hacking and violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act; Edward Majerczyk, 28, pled guilty to the same...

Earin’s second-generation wireless earbuds finally arrive with Google Assistant

Earin was one of the first startups to ship truly wireless earbuds back in 2015, though they were marred with problems. The second version of Earin’s buds, which were originally teased in early 2017 and are supposed to fix a lot of the first pair’s issues, are finally being released. They include one big surprise, too: built-in Google Assistant.

The M2 wireless earbuds are on sale today in the US for $249, available in black or white (with more colors on the way). They’re also on sale in China and Japan, and they will hit Europe later this year.

I got to try a prototype of the M2s at CES 2017, and I liked what I heard and saw in my limited time with them. They were especially small and light, and the company seemed to have directly...

Google and Harvard team up to use deep learning to predict earthquake aftershocks

<em>A drum seismograph is used to record data about earthquakes and aftershocks. </em>

After a big earthquake hits, the danger isn’t over. Smaller, follow-up quakes that are triggered by the initial shock can rumble around an affected area for months, toppling structures weakened by the parent quake. Scientists can predict the size and timing of these aftershocks to some degree, but nailing the location has always proved challenging. New research from scientists at Harvard and Google suggests AI might be able to help.

In a paper published in the journal Nature this week, researchers show how deep learning can help predict aftershock locations more reliably than existing models. Scientists trained a neural network to look for patterns in a database of more than 131,000 “mainshock-aftershock” events, before testing its...

Sony’s 1000X M3 noise-canceling headphones have an improved design and USB-C

Sony’s 1000X line of wireless headphones have become the market leader for noise-canceling headsets, and this year at IFA 2018, the company has announced the latest (and greatest) model: the 1000X M3, which offer better noise canceling, an updated design, USB-C, and more.

I’ve been using the 1000X M3s for a few days, including a long seven-hour flight, and in short, they’re the real deal. It was a high bar to clear since the original 1000Xs were already some of the best noise-canceling headphones out there, and the 1000X M2 improved on that even more. But the new 1000X M3s are the best pair of noise-canceling headphones that Sony has made yet, thanks to a host of improvements both big and small. We haven’t had time to put them through...

The president’s attacks on social media are incoherent and depressing

It was a vexing day.

Conversations about social media continued to dominate the capital. “Conversations” is too strong a word — it was more like a sustained airing of petty grievances. As usual it was unclear what, if anything, would emerge from these grievances, other than another round of headlines about them.

Start with grievance No. 1: the president said he lost social media followers because of anti-conservative censorship:

“I think that Google and Facebook and Twitter, I think they treat conservatives and Republicans very unfairly. I could tell you that I have personal experience. I have a lot of people on the various platforms,” he said, citing a total following of 160 million accounts across different platforms. “That’s a lot of...

Google’s in-house security key is now available to anyone who wants one

Google’s Titan Security Key is finally available to anyone who wants one. The two-factor token went live today in the Google store, with a full kit available for $50, shipping immediately. The kits include a USB key, a Bluetooth key, and various connectors. The key has been available to Google Cloud customers since July, when the project was first publicly announced.

Built to the FIDO standard, the Titan keys work as a second factor for a number of services, including Facebook, Dropbox, and Github. But not surprisingly, they’re built particularly for Google account logins, particularly the Advanced Protection Program announced in October. Because the keys verify themselves with a complex handshake rather than a static code, they’re far...

HTC’s U12 Life brings back the headphone jack with a two-tone design

HTC is announcing a “lite” version of the HTC U12 Plus flagship today. The HTC U12 Life is a mid-range smartphone that’s more of a successor to the U11 Life from last year, than a U12 Plus at a lower price point. HTC is using a 6-inch FHD+ (2160 x 1080) display this year, with a 18:9 aspect ratio and 1500:1 contrast ratio. While most phone makers are pushing towards notches, HTC is avoiding them once again with the U12 Life, but the company has shrunk the bezels at the bottom and top of the display somewhat.

The most obvious changes over last year’s model can be found in the design. HTC is shipping the U12 Life in two color options: twilight purple and moonlight blue. The blue variant will be the mainstream color choice, and in sunlight...

The UE Boom 3 and MegaBoom 3 give the iconic speakers their first redesign in years

Since they launched in 2013, Ultimate Ears’ Boom speakers have been some of the most recognizable Bluetooth speakers around, and they set something of a standard for what a rugged, portable speaker should look and sound like. UE has updated a few things here and there over the years with the UE Boom 2 and the addition of the larger MegaBoom and new software tricks, but things haven’t really fundamentally changed since the original UE Boom came out. That changes now.

Today, Ultimate Ears announced the UE Boom 3 and MegaBoom 3. (UE is seemingly skipping the MegaBoom 2 to keep the branding consistent.) They mark the biggest update yet to UE’s speakers. The UE Boom 3 will cost $149 when it hits stores in early to mid-September, while the...

Asus killed the bezels on its new ZenBooks

<em>The new Asus ZenBook 13, 14, and 15.</em>

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve attended a major tech exhibition like IFA and found myself having to ask if the product I’m looking at is the new or the previous model. Tech companies release way too many products way too quickly. But that’s not an issue with Asus’ new ZenBooks, which are dramatically, hilariously, delightfully smaller than their predecessors. The key to it all? Drastically reduced bezels that turn the previously sizable 13-inch ZenBook into a tiny bijou of a laptop, while the new 14-inch ZenBook has a footprint smaller than the previous 13-inch model. It’s a runaway triumph of an intergenerational upgrade.

The ZenBooks (minus any additional qualifiers like Pro or Flip) are basically Asus’ midrange laptops....
