Netflix plans to release its first scripted podcast

Netflix is branching out beyond scripted video and nonfiction podcasts to create fictional podcasts. The company said today it’s planning to release a show called The Only Podcast Left as a fictional companion to its new apocalyptic zombie show Daybreak. The podcast takes place in Daybreak’s universe and tells the story of a group of teens who make a podcast during the apocalypse. It’ll exclusively be available through Spotify until December 12th, which is when it’ll be released on other platforms.
Netflix already produces companion podcasts for some of its content, including a behind-the-scenes show about Stranger Things, and another called You Can’t Make This Up about how Netflix filmmakers create their true crime dramas. Other video...

The Verge Guide to the Apple Watch

The Apple Watch has become the standard by which all other smartwatches are measured. It provides you with information about your fitness, heart rate, and general health; lets you listen to your favorite music and other audio streams; notifies your friends or family in case of emergency; lets you access texts and email; and even (if you have an LTE-equipped version) allows you to make and take phone calls.
It’s got style, as well. You can take your pick of a wide variety of watch cases, bands, and faces. Some of those faces give you immediate feedback on your steps, the weather, or the position of the Moon. Others simply tell you what time it is — but with flair and imaginative designs. You can even have your watch show off your...

It’s harder to ban political ads on Twitter than it sounds

If you’ve ever wondered about the value of having multiple social networks competing to develop the best products and policies, Wednesday offered us a clear example.
Facebook is now three weeks into a controversy over whether (and how) it ought to regulate political ads, and the lies those ads will inevitably sometimes contain. Lots of folks (including some Facebook employees) have proposed ideas, including banning political ads from the platform altogether.
Today, Jack Dorsey took their suggestion — for Twitter. In a thoughtful thread, Dorsey laid out his case for banning both issue ads and campaign ads. Notably, he honed in on two things that make social ads unique: their speed, and the way they can target small niche communities at...

AirPods Pro teardown confirms that they’re just as disposable as ever

iFixit has completed its traditional teardown of Apple’s latest AirPods and, just as Apple promised, it’s bad news for repairs. The organization awarded the noise-canceling buds a big fat zero repairability score, noting that their “non-modular, glued-together design and lack of replacement parts makes repair both impractical and uneconomical.” That’s the same score as both versions of the original AirPods.
This means that once the battery in your $249 AirPods Pro degrades and eventually dies, you’ve got no other option but to dispose of them. When you do, the best thing to do is to send them back to Apple for recycling knowing that you’re doing the environment a little favor.

Nintendo’s Switch Lite helps boost hardware sales by more than 50 percent

Nintendo’s third-quarter earnings are out, and they reveal that the company sold 4.8 million Switch consoles between July and September, a year-on-year increase of just over 50 percent. 41.67 million units have been shipped in total as of September 30th, meaning the Switch will almost certainly overtake the SNES this holiday season to become Nintendo’s second most popular home console ever.
This quarter saw the release of the Switch Lite, a new handheld-only version of the console that can’t dock to a TV but costs $100 less. The Lite sold 1.85 million units, while the regular Switch — which also got a new version with better battery life — sold 2.85 million.
Nintendo has continued to put out solid content for the Switch, and this...

Strong Galaxy Note 10 sales help stem falling Samsung profits

Samsung Electronics has reported third-quarter earnings that show sharp declines year-on-year due to the ongoing slow performance of the global memory chip market, which had been the company’s biggest profit driver. In other areas, however, Samsung is doing pretty well.
Overall, the company made 62 trillion won (~$53 billion) in revenue and 7.78 trillion won (~$6.71 billion) in operating profit, year-on-year drops of 5 and 56 percent respectively. But the mobile business alone posted revenue of 29.25 trillion won (~$25 billion), up 17 percent, with profit rising 32 percent to 2.92 trillion won (~$2.5 billion). Profit is also slightly up at the display panel business.
Samsung says the improved mobile earnings were due to strong sales of...

US Interior Department is grounding its drone fleet due to risks of Chinese spying

The US Interior Department, which oversees federal land and resource management, says it’s grounding its entire aerial drone fleet of more than 800 UAVs out of concern for Chinese spying and drone-aided cyberattacks. The news was first reported by The Wall Street Journal today, and the department confirmed the grounding to The Verge.
Every drone in use by the Interior Department is either manufactured in China or uses some Chinese-made parts, the WSJ reports. Interior Secretary David Bernhardt made the order earlier today, and the drones will remain grounded until the department completes a review of the security risks they may pose.
“Secretary Bernhardt is...

How to find your Apple Watch

Even the best of us can occasionally misplace an item. Even something like the Apple Watch, which is usually safe on your wrist, can be lost. You come home from a run, pull off your watch and drop it — somewhere in the living room. The band comes loose while you’re out watching the latest Marvel movie, and you walk out of the theater without it. Your three-year-old decides it might be fun to play with your Watch for a few minutes, and then leaves it under a pile of stuffed toys.
What do you do?
Luckily, Apple’s “Find My” app works as well with your Watch as with your iPhone — better, in fact, because you can use your iPhone to find your wandering Watch.
- Go to the Watch app on your phone. (You can also get there by tapping on the “Find...

Spotify launches a dedicated Kids app with curated playlists and playful art

Spotify is launching a new app called Spotify Kids that’s meant to provide a safe space for kids to explore and listen to music — and finally get “Baby Shark” out of their parents’ Discover playlists.
The app, which launches today in Ireland, includes around 6,000 tracks, all of which have been curated by editors at Spotify. For “younger kids,” the app will be limited to things like Disney soundtracks, songs about dinosaurs, and children’s stories. If parents set the app up for an “older kid,” then it will add pop hits from artists like Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Bruno Mars.
Spotify editors are looking at more than whether a song contains foul language when determining if it’s an appropriate fit for this app. References to guns and...

Hate speech is spreading on Facebook in India again

We’ve spent the past couple weeks looking at the clash of social networks and democracy in the United States. So let’s turn our attention abroad.
Assam is a state in India that is home to a large population of Bengali Muslims. The ruling party of India, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are Hindu nationalists. In August, after six years of development, the government released a controversial national register of citizens that omitted 1.9 million residents, many of them Muslim. The government has presented the project as part of an effort to expel “infiltrators,” but the overall effect has been to create an environment of fear for minorities in Assam, many of whom are poor.
None of that is Facebook’s doing. But as we have seen before in...

The functionality looks similar to Samsung’s “AR Doodle” feature which it introduced with the Galaxy Note 10. However, Samsung’s feature has the added benefit of using the phone’s S Pen stylus, which should be more precise than drawing with your finger on the screen.

The PS4 has outsold the original PlayStation and the Wii

Sony has announced as part of its second-quarter earnings report that it sold 2.8 million PlayStation 4 consoles between July and September. Since the company hit exactly 100 million sales three months ago, the total is now at 102.8 million, meaning the PS4 has outsold the original PlayStation.
The PlayStation, as you may remember, was an enormous success. It sold 102.5 million units, vastly more than competitors like the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64, and until now it was the second best-selling home console of all time behind the PS2, which sold a probably unrepeatable 155 million. Also of note: the Nintendo Wii’s total of 101.6 million has been surpassed this quarter as well.

Blizzard lost a big sponsor after the Hong Kong outcry: Mitsubishi

Blizzard Entertainment may be feeling the effects of its controversial ban of Hong Kong Hearthstone player Ng “Blitzchung” Wai Chung for quite some time. The company not only faced a widespread player boycott, condemnations from US lawmakers, and numerous employee walkouts over the decision, but it also lost a key sponsor of its international gaming competitions.
According to The Daily Beast, Mitsubishi decided to pull sponsorships of Blizzard e-sports events after the company banned Wai Chung for voicing support for the Hong Kong protesters in a televised post-game interview earlier this month. Reddit users first noticed the disappearance of the Mitsubishi logo during a recent Asia Pacific Hearthstone tournament, and the company...

Here’s what HBO Max looks like

HBO Max, AT&T’s upcoming $15 a month streaming video service, looks nothing like its HBO Now counterpart.
Here’s a brief tour:
AT&T and WarnerMedia showed off the first look at its product interface at a special investor event today, with Andy Forssell, executive vice president and general manager, speaking about the importance of human curation, instead of simply relying on algorithms like Netflix and other competitors. That’s why HBO’s “Recommended by Humans” feature, something the company rolled out earlier this year, is getting a big lift on HBO Max. Celebrities will now have pages where they can list their own recommendations. HBO Max customers can then use those recommendation pages to select a movie or TV show directly from that...

HBO announces new Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon

HBO has ordered a Game of Thrones spinoff series, House of the Dragon, straight to series.
The new prequel is written by Ryan Condal (Colony), with George R.R. Martin set to co-executive produce. The project is based on Martin’s 2019 book Fire and Blood, and is a history of House Targaryen (the ancestors of Daenerys) as they fight through a civil war. The series is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
HBO executive Casey Bloys made the announcement at an event for HBO Max, AT&T’s streaming service coming May 2020. The news comes just hours after news broke that HBO canceled a previously announced Game of Thrones spinoff series.

HBO Max launches in May 2020 for $14.99 a month

HBO Max, AT&T’s big foray into streaming, will launch in May 2020 for per $14.99 a month, the company announced at a special event held for investors. An ad-supported tier will reportedl launch in 2021.

HBO Now, its other HBO-branded streaming service, is $15 a month. That’s about the same cost as the channel via cable packages.
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson teased the importance of today’s event, which took place at the iconic Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California, during a call with investors yesterday. Stephenson called the streaming service...

Buying Fitbit won’t help Google overcome Apple’s biggest smartwatch advantage

Google is reportedly looking to buy Fitbit as a way to bolster its wearables strategy. Trying to suss out what this could mean for Google, its Wear OS platform, and Fitbit’s customers is (pardon the fitness pun) exhausting.
Here’s where I landed: Assuming it bears out, I think that this acquisition portends a wearables reboot instead of shoring up Google’s current smartwatch strategy. I think that mainly because Google’s current smartwatch strategy isn’t helped by Fitbit — at all. Unless Google has completely lost the thread, this acquisition only makes sense if the company is ready to try something completely different.
It certainly should be.
Let’s just recap how poorly things are going for Wear OS. Google’s most prolific partner in...

WhatsApp fixes the notification badge on muted iOS chats

WhatsApp’s latest iOS update stops showing an unread notification badge on its app icon for messages you’ve muted. It’s a minor but welcome change that arrived with version 2.19.110 of the iOS app. The change applies for both individual and group chats.
The messaging app’s mute feature is invaluable if you want to reduce distractions, particularly if you’re a participant in any large group chats. Before the update, muting a chat would only stop your phone from vibrating and playing a notification sound when it received a new message, while doing nothing about the anxiety-inducing red notification badge placed on the app’s icon on the home screen.
The new update only affects iOS users. On Android, meanwhile, WhatsApp has a separate “Show...

Benioff and Weiss recently signed a $200 million multi-year deal with Netflix to produce exclusive content. The decision to walk away from the Star Wars universe means that the pair’s output will be solely under Netflix’s umbrella for the foreseeable future. A new trailer for Disney’s first ever live-action Star Wars show, The Mandalorian, has arrived, just a couple of weeks ahead of Disney+’s highly anticipated launch.
The new trailer includes a few interesting shots, including putting a spotlight on some of the space beasts that will come across the Mandalorian’s path. There are also new spaceship fights, and a promise that fans will get a deeper look at bounty hunting — a “difficult profession.” The time for peace has come to an end.
Set in between Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi and the rise of the First Order in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the show follows a new character played by Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones). Pascal described him as “a mysterious lone gunfighter in...

Elon Musk will go to trial over “pedo guy” tweets, judge rules

Elon Musk’s request to dismiss a defamation lawsuit filed by a caver was denied by a Los Angeles judge today, Bloomberg reported. The defamation suit centers on tweets where Musk called the caver, Vernon Unsworth, a “pedo guy.” Musk also sent emails to BuzzFeed journalist Ryan Mac, which are now part of the case.
A jury will decide whether those tweets and emails count as recklessly negligent, US District Judge Stephen Wilson ruled.
The debacle began during a Thai rescue operation, when a group of boys were trapped in a cave. Musk, along with some of his engineers, built a mini submarine that they sent to Thailand. Unsworth dismissed the mini sub in a CNN interview as a “PR stunt,” and said Musk could “stick his submarine where it...

DJI Mavic Mini images and specs leak in new retailer listing

An early retail listing on Newegg’s Canadian store has given us official images of DJI’s unannounced Mavic Mini, as well as listing its specs. DJI’s new drone is something of an open secret at this point. We saw an FCC listing for the drone back in August, and DroneDJ published hands on images just last week. But the retailer listing adds credence to those earlier leaks, and prices the diminutive drone at $646.15 Canadian dollars (around $494) when sold with DJI’s Fly More kit.
One of the more important specs listed on Newegg’s page is the drone’s weight of just 249g. This means that any owners in the US (and soon the UK) won’t have to register this drone with the authorities in order to fly it. Previously, DJI’s lightest Mavic drone was...

It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play, we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend.
A certain amount of frustration in a video game, especially a puzzle game, can be a good thing. Depending on how it’s utilized, it can help to create much more exhilarating moments of success when things finally click together and you understand the solution to the puzzle in front of you. Kine, in its best moments, has that sort of good frustration, but those moments also feel impeded by the game’s camera. Yet, it’s still great despite that.
In the simplest terms, Kine is a puzzle game in which you try to move a block...

7 new trailers you should watch this week

I’m writing this entire column having just gotten back from seeing Parasite, so you’ll have to excuse me if my thoughts are a little scattered because Parasite is, to put it mildly, completely bonkers. There are no words to properly describe my feelings toward that film.
To be clear, you should go see Parasite, the new movie from Snowpiercer director Bong Joon-ho, assuming any of this sounds appealing to you. The film somehow manages to strike a balance between being very fun and funny, and being extremely tense and serious, packed inside what could maybe be very vaguely described as a heist movie about class, earning every moment of it along the way.
It’s not often that you get to see a movie where you truly have no concept of where...

How to add and change watchfaces on your Apple Watch

Decorative and functional watchfaces are a signature feature of the Apple Watch. It’s pretty easy to select one and tweak their appearance. In fact, you can do it either from the Watch itself or on your iPhone. And if you’re tired of your current choices, you can always add a new one.
On your iPhone
To switch to a previously installed watchface:
- Open the Watch app. You’ll see a scrolling line of the watchfaces you’ve previously installed. Swipe left and right to find the one you want to use or customize, and tap it.
- Scroll down and tap on “Set as current Watch Face.” You’re good to go.
Customizing a watchface — in other words, changing the color, style, or some other aspect — will work a little...

Migrating eagles racked up a huge cellular bill

Migrating eagles with tracking beacons that send texts reportedly accrued roaming charges so high that scientists had to take out a loan to pay for them, as well as attempt to raise money from a crowdfunding campaign — because some of the birds made unexpected detours (via BBC).
One eagle, Min, was apparently so far off course that its transmitter sent enough texts to eat up the entire tracking budget, according to the BBC. Min was expected to fly to Kazakhstan, where it would have sent a bunch of coordinates over SMS that it collected while out of range of a network. Those texts would have cost of approximately 30 cents each. However, Min apparently flew straight to Iran and the texts were sent from there, where they cost approximately...

Somehow, Android’s messaging mess is about to get even worse

I am so discombobulated by yesterday’s news that the four major US carriers are banding together to make a whole other company to replace SMS with RCS and ship their own app that I barely know where to begin.
I guess at the beginning.
One of the biggest botched opportunities in all of Silicon Valley in the past few years is Google’s repeated, persistent, tragic-on-a-Greek-scale failure to get its messaging products right. Six (six!) years ago I detailed Google’s massive effort to unify everything under Hangouts. Every year since then has been either a fiasco, catastrophe, retrenchment, or an outright retreat.
After five years of that, Google threw in the towel and put the carriers in charge of text messaging on Android. It went all in...

Google’s ‘.new’ shortcut now works with calendar entries

Google has added a new way to quickly create calendar entries when using a browser. If you head over to “cal.new” or “meeting.new,” you’ll find it takes you to a blank Google Calendar entry, ready for you to fill out its details. It’s a small feature, but it means you don’t have to open up your entire calendar if you just want to add a single meeting.
I’m a big fan of Google’s “.new” top-level domains. The company already lets you use them to create G Suite documents (I literally use “docs.new” every working day), and the company recently extended the functionality to creating Google Keep notes with “keep.new.” Once you’re in the habit of it, it becomes second nature to hit “Ctrl + T” and start typing away in a new document or note,...

A new Facebook News tab is starting to roll out in the United States

Facebook began testing a new home for news in its mobile app today called Facebook News. It will roll out to a few hundred thousand users in the United States and host reporting from big publishers, including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and BuzzFeed. Facebook is paying some (but not all) participating publishers for their work, offering a welcome new revenue stream for the ever-challenged media industry — at least for as long as it lasts.
“People want and benefit from personalized experiences on Facebook, but we know there is reporting that transcends individual experience,” Facebook said in a blog post. “We want to support both.”
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to discuss the new tab onstage today with News Corp. CEO...

America’s nuclear forces finally drop ancient 8-inch floppy disk system

The US Defense Department has finally ended the use of 8-inch floppy disks for coordinating the country’s nuclear forces. C4ISRNET reports that as of this June, the USA’s Strategic Automated Command and Control System (SACCS) has transitioned to a “highly secure solid state digital storage solution.” SACCS is one of the US nuclear force’s ways of sending messages between nuclear command centers and the field.
The US nuclear force had originally planned on phasing out the system by the end of 2017, after a government report had raised concerns about the use of the outdated technology the previous year. C4ISRNET notes that the report had also called for the modernization of various other portable and desktop terminals, as well as “port...

Why 10 percent of all Google Search results are changing

Google is currently rolling out a change to its core search algorithm that it says could change the rankings of results for as many as one in ten queries. It’s based on cutting-edge natural language processing (NLP) techniques developed by Google researchers and applied to its search product over the course of the past 10 months.
In essence, Google is claiming that it is improving results by having a better understanding of how words relate to each other in a sentence. In one example Google discussed at a briefing with journalists yesterday, its search algorithm was able to parse the meaning of the following phrase: “Can you get medicine for someone pharmacy?”
The old Google search algorithm treated that sentence as a “bag of words,”...

Jaguar’s slick new electric hypercar will only exist in Gran Turismo

Jaguar has placed itself at the forefront of the electric car revolution with the I-Pace SUV, despite being a smaller player in the overall car market. The British automaker also competes in all-electric racing series Formula E, and operates a whole support series made up of I-Paces. But the latest and greatest electric car from Jaguar will only be available in pixel form (at least, for now), as Jaguar has announced it’s the latest automaker to participate in the now six-year-long Vision Gran Turismo project, which has helped create a number of truly wild concept cars.
On Friday, the company debuted the Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupé, a low-slung hypercar that will be available to play in Gran Turismo Sport on the PlayStation 4...

RED cancels Hydrogen phone project as founder Jim Jannard retires

RED’s ambitious Hydrogen phone project is ending after the release of just a single device, the Hydrogen One, according to an announcement from company founder Jim Jannard that he is “shutting down the HYDROGEN project” as he retires due to “a few health issues.”
The Red Hydrogen One was the first smartphone from the high-end camera company; first announced in 2017, it promised bold new technologies like a “holographic display,” a top-notch camera system, and modular attachments to expand the phone over time. After a series of delays, the phone was eventually released to a lackluster reception in October 2018.

A company that sold encrypted phones was run by crime lords

You’ve probably heard the idiom of the fox guarding the hen house — but how about the one of the encrypted phone company run by drug lords?
Okay, that’s obviously not an idiom, but it’s a true story chronicled by Vice’s Joseph Cox. In the story, Cox tells how MPC — a now-seemingly defunct company that apparently sold phones, tablets, and computers running custom firmware with significant encryption protections — was ultimately controlled by two at-large criminal kingpins known as The Brothers.
As Cox’s reporting explains, The Brothers apparently first bought and used encrypted BlackBerrys before hiring developers to make a custom operating system that could theoretically offer them even more privacy and loaded it on phones. The story...

Google says it’s planning to build multiple first-party game studios for Stadia exclusives

When Microsoft was slammed for not offering enough compelling exclusive games to attract gamers to Xbox, it bought its way out — purchasing game developer after game developer to prep itself for the next console war. Now, it appears Google may similarly be shoring up the upcoming Stadia cloud gaming platform by building multiple internal game studios of its own.
In March, Google suggested its plans to become a game developer would start small, hiring Ubisoft and EA industry vet Jade Raymond to lead up a single studio dubbed Stadia Games and Entertainment. But in a new interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Raymond reveals that Google isn’t planning to stop at just one.
“We have a plan that includes building out a few different first-party...

Samsung announces more powerful Exynos processor without built-in 5G

Just shy of two months after announcing the Exynos 980, Samsung has announced a new chipset, the Exynos 990. The new processor is built on Samsung’s 7nm process, and includes a Mali-G77 GPU that increases graphical performance or power efficiency compared to Samsung’s previous chip by up to 20 percent as well as an octa-core CPU that should be 20 percent faster.
While it seems strange to see two processors announced in such quick succession, the Exynos 990 seems to be targeted at a slightly different market. VentureBeat notes that it lacks the integrated 5G modem found in the 980, meaning it will be better suited to 4G devices. It’s the faster processor of the two, but Samsung would need to pair it with a separate modem — like the 5G...

Chromebooks will more easily sideload Android apps with Chrome OS 80

Chromebooks are able to run Android apps, but mostly just ones from the Google Play Store — if you wanted to install something that’s not officially sanctioned, you’d generally need to flip your device into a far less secure Developer Mode and/or beam it over from a tethered phone. That won’t be the case with Chrome OS 80, though — that release will add a native sideloading option for Android app APKs, according to Google.
Just ask AboutChromebooks’ Kevin Tofel, who spotted the news at Google’s Android Dev Summit this morning: this is a feature that some have been waiting on a very long while. And while Google suggests it’s merely for developers who want to debug and deploy their apps without needing a second device, it might come in...
