WhatsApp ups limit on video calls to eight people

WhatsApp video calls can now include up to eight people instead of just four. In order to reach the new upper limit, everyone on the call will need to be running the updated version of the app. To start a group video call, you can either initiate the call directly from a group chat or add extra people manually after starting a one-on-one call. WhatsApp’s site notes that its video calls are end-to-end encrypted.

For those keeping track, WhatsApp’s new limit compares to the 12-person limit that was recently introduced for Google Duo. Meanwhile, Apple’s FaceTime supports 32, Houseparty supports eight, Skype and Facebook’s new Messenger Rooms service support 50, and Zoom’s free tier supports 100.

Facebook to stream a virtual graduation ceremony with Oprah Winfrey as commencement speaker

Students around the world are going to miss their opportunity to have an in-person graduation ceremony, so Facebook has decided to host its own version.

The social media platform announced today that it’ll stream a live graduation event on May 15th over Facebook, which will feature a commencement speech from Oprah Winfrey, as well as smaller speeches by Awkwafina, Jennifer Garner, Lil Nas X, and Simone Biles. Miley Cyrus will also perform. Although the show will be broadcast over Facebook, select clips will show up on Instagram, at @instagram, too.

That detail was revealed in a Surface engineering webinar leaked on Twitter by WalkingCat, wherein a Microsoft employee lays out all the engineering involved in the company’s latest devices.

US spending on tech booms even as overall purchasing declines

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a surge in sales for consumer technology in the US, even as spending declines overall, an NPD analyst is reporting. For the week ending April 18th, NPD’s Stephen Baker notes that consumer tech sales increased by 23 percent year-over-year. In contrast, the group tracked an overall decline in spending of 23 percent across the industries it tracks. NPD’s data also suggests that people are buying more tech to keep themselves entertained, not just to work or learn remotely.

TikTok’s latest stickers let you donate to charity

TikTok creators can now add Donation Stickers to their videos and live streams to encourage followers to donate to charitable causes during the coronavirus pandemic, the company has announced. Once added, users can tap the stickers to instantly be taken to a donation page within the app where they can add credit card details and the donation amount. TikTok says it will match the first $10 million donated globally until May 27th.

It’s emerged that the new iPhone SE, which started shipping last Friday, has a curious feature missing: unlike every other modern iPhone, you’re unable to bring up rich content on the lock screen or notification shade with a “Haptic Touch” long press. MacRumors noted the omission, and The Verge has confirmed it on a device of our own.

You can still see the rich content — like larger images, or buttons for things like archiving emails without opening the app — by swiping lock-screen notifications to the left and tapping “View,” so it’s not like the functionality has gone away completely. iFixit’s iPhone SE teardown reveals which pieces come from older iPhones

Reviews of the new 2020 iPhone SE are here and so is iFixit’s teardown of the device. While the $400 handset has a design similar to that of an iPhone 8, the teardown reveals that it’s surprisingly modern on the inside.

Specifically, the phone includes an A13 Bionic SoC with a third-generation neural engine. This, according to iFixit, was pulled from the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. That’s significantly more powerful than the iPhone 8’s A11 Bionic chip, and it should enable the product to handle whatever workload you throw at it.

UPS and CVS will use drones to deliver prescriptions in Florida

UPS and CVS are teaming up to deliver prescription medicine via drone to residents of The Villages retirement community in Florida. The service, which will use Matternet’s M2 drones, is being conducted with authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The drone deliveries will begin on May 4th. The first flights will be less than half a mile and will be delivered to a pickup location near the retirement community. Initially, a UPS ground vehicle will complete the delivery to the resident’s door. The prescriptions will be delivered from one CVS store, with two additional stores joining at a later date.

Last week, Twitter turned off the ability to receive SMS messages containing the text of new tweets. The feature was disabled in all but “a few countries” that rely on the feature.

Apple is reportedly delaying mass production of its upcoming iPhone 12 handsets by around a month. The Wall Street Journal reports that the impact of the coronavirus pandemic across supply chains and manufacturing has disrupted Apple’s iPhone 12 mass production plans. Rumors suggest Apple will introduce four new iPhone models later this year, all with 5.4-, 6.1-, or 6.7-inch OLED screens.

Apple typically unveils its annual iPhone refresh in September and begins shipping devices before the end of the month. The iPhone maker is able to do this thanks to mass manufacturing over the summer months, allowing the company to quickly ship devices to retailers after the handsets are officially unveiled.

Amazon pilots using video calls to verify third-party sellers

Amazon is testing using video calls to verify third-party sellers as it attempts to minimize the amount of fraudulent accounts and listings on its platform, the company has announced. The live verification initiative initially used in-person meetings when it began earlier this year, but pivoted to video conferencing as the COVID-19 pandemic made social distancing measures necessary.

“As we practice social distancing, we are testing a process that allows us to validate prospective sellers’ identification via video conferencing,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement, “This pilot allows us to connect one-on-one with prospective sellers while making it even more difficult for fraudsters to hide.”

Vivo overtakes Samsung in Indian smartphone sales

Vivo shipped more smartphones in India than Samsung for the first time ever last quarter, according to data from Canalys. The company’s sales to vendors nearly doubled year-on-year to 6.7 million units, almost 20 percent of the market, securing it second place behind Xiaomi’s 10.3 million units and 31-percent share. Samsung’s shipments slid 14 percent to 6.3 million units, making it the third-biggest brand ahead of Realme and Oppo.

Overall, the Indian market grew 12 percent year-on-year despite the country going into lockdown in late March. It’s worth pointing out that Vivo is a BBK Electronics brand alongside Realme and Oppo. Australia’s COVIDSafe contact tracing app already has more than a million downloads

Australia launched a coronavirus contact tracing app on Sunday, drawing over a million downloads within a just few hours, the BBC reported. COVIDSafe lets devices conduct a “digital handshake” when they come within 5 feet of each other, notifying users if they’ve come into contact for longer than 15 minutes with an infected person.

Australia’s voluntary app is based on Singapore’s TraceTogether software, and uses Bluetooth and stored contact data, Reuters reported. The government says the app doesn’t collect location data and an infected person must consent to having their data shared.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates expects his foundation to work “almost entirely” on the coronavirus pandemic in the near future, the Financial Times reported. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has a $40 billion endowment, and has worked on HIV and malaria and polio eradication. But Gates said the foundation has shifted most of that focus to work on the coronavirus.

“This has the foundation’s total attention,” Gates told the FT. “Even our non-health related work, like higher education and K-12 [schools], is completely switched around to look at how you facilitate online learning.”

Tesla reportedly plans to recall some workers to its California plant this week

Tesla plans to call some workers back to its assembly plant in Fremont, California staring April 29th, despite a shelter-in-place order in the San Francisco Bay Area in effect through May 3rd, Bloomberg News reported.

Plant leaders sent messages to workers in the Fremont factory’s paint and stamping operations asking them to respond and confirm whether they plan to come to work, according to Bloomberg.

Tesla temporarily shut down its Fremont plant March 23rd but continued trying to convince local officials that the factory was an “essential business” that shouldn’t be subject to the shelter-in-place order.
