The last thing on my mind when building or upgrading a PC is whether my graphics card’s screws are tight enough. But it turns out that even a few slightly loose screws could cause a GPU to overheat, because if the cooler isn’t tightly pressed against the silicon, it can potentially cause the graphics chip to heat up more than it should.

That’s according to Asus, which was busy investigating its AMD RX 5700 series graphics cards’ reportedly hot temperatures when it discovered that adding additional pressure to the heatsink could cool those GPUs down. Asus says that while AMD tells manufacturers to mount the cooler using a force of 30-40 PSI, it found it could add new screws to increase the mounting pressure to between 50-60 PSI —...

It’s the earliest Google has ever done a preview like this, so the updates here aren’t that front-facing, but Google’s making some big promises, like improved support for 5G, better privacy features, and new messaging interfaces.

Also: this is really, really a preview meant for developers only — it’s just for the Pixel 2, 3, 3A, or 4, and it can only be installed with a full flash that will wipe all your data. In other words, you shouldn’t install this on your main device, unless you like using a busted phone.

The company announced that ads made by influencers, on behalf of politicians, would be allowed on the platform so long as they were labeled as ads. The company will not, however, put those ads in its Ads Library, where they can be reviewed by the public. It’s not clear that anyone will review those ads outside of Facebook, as the Federal Elections Commission, which regulates political advertising, currently has no policy on influencer marketing. The influencer posts can be fact-checked, unless they contain the speech of a politician, in which case they cannot.

Electric bikes have returned to Citi Bike, after a braking malfunction led to their temporary removal from the nation’s largest bike-share system.

Starting this week, Citi Bike will begin adding “several hundred” e-bikes to its network of 900 stations in New York City. The rollout will increase gradually over the next several months, with operators hoping to have a promised 4,000 e-bikes as part of the fleet by the end of the year.

Galaxy Z Flip teardown reveals that its hinge brushes may not block much dust

iFixit has posted a video teardown of Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip, giving us good look at the phone’s internals and revealing that the brushes on its hinge might not stop much dust from getting inside your phone.

When Samsung announced the Z Flip last week, it highlighted how the phone’s hinge has a “fiber shield” intended to trap stray dust and keep it from getting inside the phone. Nintendo announces first new Switch Lite color since launch

Nintendo has announced the first new Switch Lite color since the portable-only console launched last fall. The new hue is “coral,” perhaps belatedly inspired by Pantone’s decision to name “Living Coral” the Color of the Year for 2019. Or maybe Nintendo wants it out in time for cherry blossom season.

Coral joins turquoise, grey, and yellow in the regular lineup. It’ll be available in Japan on March 20th, with preorders starting on March 7th. Notably, the launch of the new system doesn’t appear to have been affected by the coronavirus outbreak, unlike the upcoming Animal Crossing-themed Switch.

Coronavirus impact on tech industry predicted in new report

Supply-chain analytics provider TrendForce has issued a report assessing the likely impact of the 2019-nCoV outbreak on tech manufacturing. The coronavirus has already caused major disruption throughout the tech industry, with huge trade shows cancelled and companies like Apple expecting to miss their forecasts.

The report breaks its assessments down into individual components as well as product categories to provide a broad overview of the industry. It could also give some indication of what’s in store for individual companies like Apple. It’s worth reading the whole thing, but here are a few takeaways:

Google winds down free Station Wi-Fi program

Google is shutting down Station, a program that saw the company offer free Wi-Fi across over 400 railway stations in India and other locations worldwide since 2016, TechCrunch reports. Google Station’s website says that the service is currently live in Brazil, South Africa, Nigeria, Thailand, the Philippines, Mexico, India, and Indonesia. The Station program will be wound down globally this year.

Google explained that it took the decision to end the program because it was becoming difficult to scale up and to make it a sustainable business. The company had worked with various partners in each market where it offered the Station service, but each had different technical and infrastructure requirements. Tesla forced to pause Berlin Gigafactory after environmental challenge

A German court has forced Tesla to temporarily halt preparation work for its Gigafactory near Berlin after local activists raised concerns about its impact on wildlife and water supplies, Reuters reports. The electric car company is currently in the process of clearing 92 hectares of forest in Gruenheide, east of Berlin, where it hopes to build its first European Gigafactory.

Tesla announced plans for Gigafactory 4 last November, but has not yet been granted official planning permission for the factory itself. However, Germany’s environment ministry told the company it could start preparing the site in advance “at its own risk,” according to BBC News.
