Amazon VP quits over whistleblower firings in scathing blog post

Tim Bray, a senior engineer and vice president at Amazon Web Services, has quit his job because he was “dismayed” that the company fired whistleblowers who were trying to draw attention to the dire straits of Amazon warehouse workers, he wrote in a blog post.

“Remaining an Amazon VP would have meant, in effect, signing off on actions I despised,” Bray said. “So I resigned. The victims weren’t abstract entities but real people; here are some of their names: Courtney Bowden, Gerald Bryson, Maren Costa, Emily Cunningham, Bashir Mohammed, and Chris Smalls.

“I’m sure it’s a coincidence that every one of them is a person of color, a woman, or both,” the post continues. “Right?”

SoundCloud is launching a slate of weekly Twitch shows

SoundCloud is joining Twitch. The popular music streaming service is set to launch a slate of original live programming on Wednesday, May 6th, that includes shows about the industry populated by insiders, execs, and influencers. SoundCloud is the latest music service to join Twitch since concerts and tours across the globe have been canceled due to the pandemic.

Here’s how Apple’s new 13-inch MacBook Pro stacks up against the competition

Apple announced a new version of its popular 13-inch MacBook Pro, replacing the much-maligned butterfly switch keyboard with its new “Magic Keyboard” that’s used on the 16-inch MacBook Pro and the new MacBook Air. With today’s release, all of Apple’s current lineup of laptops have the improved keyboard.

There are other changes, too, like that each model now has twice the amount of storage. The base model has 256GB of storage by default, while the middle options have 512GB, and the high-end model has 1TB. And on the most expensive configuration, you’ll go from an older 8th Gen quad-core Intel Core i5 processor to one of Intel’s latest quad-core 10th Gen Core i5 CPUs, along with 16GB of faster 3733MHz RAM.

If you’ve been waiting for a version of the phone without all the bloatware that tends to come with carrier devices, then this is the one to get.

The Galaxy A51 is part of Samsung’s popular mid-range A-series. Sooner than most expected, Apple has announced a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Magic Keyboard. It features Intel 10th-Gen processors and starts at $1,299. In one sense, it is a minor spec-bump upgrade for the existing lineup of 13-inch MacBook Pros. But it also represents the end of an era: Apple no longer sells any new laptops with the much-maligned butterfly keyboard mechanism.

Apple has moved relatively quickly to cycle out the butterfly keyboard from its lineup. The 16-inch MacBook Pro was announced in November 2019, followed by a refreshed MacBook Air with Magic Keyboard this past March. HP’s new Omen gaming desktops get a glow up

HP has debuted a fresh lineup of Omen desktops, the 25L and 30L, with improved specs and a clean new design that ditches the edgy gamer aesthetic for something a little more refined. Compared to HP’s older Omen desktop designs — particularly, one we’ll refer to as the Death Cube — the new design is far less divisive and a lot more elegant.

It got rid of the flashy, old logo and simplified the look of the chassis. Sure, you can set the LEDs to display whichever color you’d like, but importantly, even that looks more subtle than HP’s past approach to desktop design. Aesthetics aside, these machines should be better at staying cool, as HP made the case’s feet nearly four times taller to allow for better airflow.

The new HP Omen 27i has lights that help you easily access its ports

There isn’t much about the new HP Omen 27i that I haven’t seen before in a gaming monitor, but it’s packed full of specs that HP hasn’t offered until now. The 27-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) nano IPS display offers far better color accuracy and contrast than the TN panels used in many of HP’s previous gaming monitors.

HP sourced this 16:9 aspect ratio display from LG (it’s likely very similar to this LG model). It features 98 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut, a 165Hz refresh rate, and 1ms response time. It also has Nvidia G-Sync compatibility, so you’ll be able to get smoother visual fidelity if you use it with a PC that has an Nvidia GTX 10-series card or greater.

Activist investor hedge fund reportedly financing Eko lawsuit against Quibi over Turnstyle feature

Hedge fund Elliott Management Corp. is financing Eko’s patent lawsuit against streaming service Quibi, The Wall Street Journal reports. Eko’s suit claims that Quibi stole trade secrets and that its “Turnstyle” feature violates Eko’s patents. Turnstyle allows Quibi videos to play differently depending on the orientation —vertical or horizontal— of the viewer’s phone, switching in real time.

Eko wants Quibi to stop using its technology or license it and is suing for a preliminary injunction and damages. As part of the financing arrangement, Elliott would get an equity stake in Eko, according to the WSJ, though it’s not clear how much money is involved.

Uber plans to require its drivers and passengers in the US to wear face coverings

Uber is planning to implement a new policy in the coming weeks requiring drivers and riders in the US and certain other countries to wear face masks or coverings, a company spokesperson confirmed on Sunday. As first reported by CNN Business, the ride-hailing company also is developing technology to detect whether its drivers are wearing face coverings before they begin accepting passenger trips.

In a statement emailed to The Verge, the spokesperson said Uber is shipping safety supplies to its drivers providing “essential trips,” and encouraging riders to stay home if they can.

Koalas lick tree trunks to quench their thirst when it rains, scientists just learned. It upends what biologists long thought about koalas: that they get almost all the water they need from the eucalyptus leaves they eat.

But koalas probably lap up water like many animals — except they do so from trees, according to the findings published today in the journal Ethology. With fires, heat waves, and droughts putting more and more stress on the critters, scientists have been paying close attention to how koalas are keeping hydrated.

“This significantly alters our understanding of how koalas gain water in the wild. It is very exciting,” lead author of the Ethology paper and University of Sydney researcher Valentina Mella said in a statement.

Disney to donate $1 million from sales of its character-themed face masks to charity

Disney is selling non-medical face masks in the US featuring characters from across its multiverse, including Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, the company announced. Disney will donate one million masks to to underserved communities via humanitarian aid organization MedShare, and all profits from the mask sales in the US through September 30th, up to $1 million, also will go to MedShare.

Kickstarter union reaches agreement with management for laid-off workers

The union for Kickstarter employees reached an agreement with management on Friday which provides protections for laid-off workers, the union said in a press release. The crowdfunding company announced in an internal memo April 20th it would likely seek layoffs, along with other cost-cutting measures. CEO Aziz Hazan wrote in the memo that Kickstarter had seen a 35 percent drop in new crowdfunding projects on the site in the past several weeks, with “no clear sign of rebound.”

I think I complained in one of these columns recently that, upon rewatching A Scanner Darkly, I felt like its animation was underused, barely scratching the surface of what such a dark, trippy film could do with that dreamy style. Fortnite is hosting a Diplo concert in its new party mode

Fortnite’s new no-guns “party royale” mode just launched on Wednesday, and the new map will play host to its first live concert tonight at 9PM ET. DJ and producer Diplo will be performing a live Major Lazer set, and actor and performer Jordan Fisher will also be part of the show, according to a tweet by Epic Games.

The concert will be held at the big, music festival-like main stage on the east side of the island. Because there are no weapons in the new mode, you shouldn’t have to worry about defending yourself, which may make it easier to just enjoy the show.

Consumer Reports has analyzed the privacy policies of Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Webex and discovered that they may be collecting more data than you realize.

To be clear: Consumer Reports isn’t saying that these apps are unsafe to use (and indeed, a separate Mozilla report found that nearly every major video conferencing app meets basic security standards). But by agreeing to the privacy policies of these services, you are giving companies like Google and Microsoft access to plenty of personal data. According to the report, all three companies reserve the right to collect information from your calls, including how long a call lasts, who’s participating in the call, and the IP addresses of everyone taking part.

HBO Max is $3 cheaper thanks to limited-time pre-order offer

Switching from HBO Now to HBO Max is a decision that incoming AT&T CEO John Stankey once said will be an “IQ test.” Now, AT&T and WarnerMedia are trying to make that upgrade even more appealing by offering a year of HBO Max, which launches on May 27th, to subscribers for $11.99 a month. That’s $3 cheaper than current HBO Now subscriptions.

Summer Game Fest, a new digital celebration, promises months of gaming news and events

Summer Game Fest, a new “industry-wide celebration of video games” that will span from May through August, was announced today. It will bring “breaking news, in-game events, and free playable content” from companies across the game industry all season long. The Apple Watch Series 5 is $100 off its original price at Best Buy

Best Buy is hosting the best deal we’ve seen on the Apple Watch Series 5, and the savings extend across the entire lineup. The 40mm GPS version is the most affordable Series 5 watch at $299, which is $100 off its original price. Notably, that’s $50 cheaper than the last time we covered a price drop on this model. Best Buy currently has a few color options in stock, though it may sell out as the day carries on. In addition to standard colorways, it is selling Nike-styled watches for the same price.

Workers from Amazon, Instacart, and others are calling in sick to protest poor virus protections

On May 1st, workers from Amazon, Whole Foods, Instacart, FedEx, Target, and Walmart joined together in a series of work stoppages to protest conditions and equipment in the face of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. The actions have been organized by a range of groups within the various companies, but are timed to coincide with International Workers’ Day. The groups are encouraging customers to boycott the stores and services for the duration of the day.

Organizers at Amazon said thousands of employees are participating in the actions nationwide.

Businesses are hinting at 5G rollout delays

Mobile carriers, network suppliers, and analysts are warning that the rollout of 5G networks could be delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The warnings came as businesses reported their quarterly earnings, in which they outlined what effect the ongoing crisis could have on their bottom lines. The full impact of the pandemic won’t be known until the June numbers are in, but right now, the US 5G rollout appears to be in better shape than Europe, with China’s deployment seemingly right on track.

Xbox Series X still set to launch on schedule, but games could be delayed

Microsoft’s Xbox chief, Phil Spencer, says the company’s next-gen Xbox Series X console is still on schedule for later this year, but game production is a little more of an unknown. In an interview with CNBC, Spencer notes that there could be “some impact” to Xbox Series X schedules, but that “the teams are doing a very good job with keeping our hardware on track” and “overall we’re in line with where we thought we would be.”

Microsoft hasn’t provided an exact release date for the Xbox Series X beyond holiday 2020.
