Facebook launches retail pop-up stores ahead of holiday season

Facebook is gearing up for the holiday season by launching a small number of pop-up shops around the United States.

The company announced today that it will open pop-ups with more than 100 brands in nine different Macy’s locations. The 100 brands’ products will be available for purchase through the pop-up shops, and they are some of the “most-loved brands” on Instagram and Facebook, according to a blog post on the company’s website. Some of those brands include Love Your Melon, an apparel line that helps raise awareness and fight against pediatric cancers, and Two Blind Brothers, a nonprofit clothing line that donates all proceeds to blindness research.

Lenovo opened a cashier-less store in Beijing

Lenovo is the next company to get into cashier-less convenience stores, following Alibaba, Walmart-owned Sam’s Club, JD, and Amazon. The hardware maker launched a cashier-less store in Beijing last week that sells Cup Noodles, juice boxes, and other small snacks.

To enter the “Lenovo Lecoo Unmanned Store,” customers wave to a tablet with a camera, which uses facial recognition to identify their account profile. Then, like Amazon Go’s system, customers can browse, pick up the items, freely exit, and the charges will be automatically deducted from their mobile payments accounts.

Press releases had announced that series star Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) would depart the series well ahead of the expected midseason finale send-off. It was quick, clean, and surprising — a stark contrast to the show’s tradition of milking key dramatic moments to the point of audience fatigue. The ship is now equipped for a worst-case-scenario with medical treatment facilities and a helipad, in case returning astronauts need to be evacuated quickly to a hospital.

Gab is back online after being banned by GoDaddy, PayPal, and more

Social network Gab, a less-moderated alternative to Facebook or Twitter that’s popular among far-right figures, is back online after losing its domain registrar and hosting service. The site resumed operations on Sunday, slightly more than a week after a Gab user allegedly shot and killed 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue, prompting several companies to stop working with the site.

Gab went offline on October 28th, following news reports that shooter Robert Bowers maintained a site profile full of anti-Semitic tirades. But the game developer that originated as an internal Google startup first got off the ground developing one of the earliest mainstream AR apps years earlier. Chrome will soon ad-block an entire website if it shows abusive ads

With Chrome 71, Google is stepping up its fight against the internet’s abusive ads problem by blocking every ad on a site that persistently shows them. Abusive ads come in many forms, but broadly speaking cause your browser to misbehave by either generating fake system messages, automatically redirecting you, or attempt to steal personal information.

This isn’t the first time that Google has tried to use Chrome to address the problem. Back in July, Chrome 68 would prevent sites from opening new tabs or windows if they were reported for serving abusive experiences. 7-Eleven announced today that it’s installing scan-and-go technology in 14 Dallas-based stores this week, according to Digiday. The technology will allow customers to scan the barcodes of items they want to buy and then pay through their phone, either with a card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.

Customers will need the 7-Eleven rewards app to complete the transaction. People will have to then scan a QR code on their way out of the store to confirm payment. Samsung teases its foldable phone reveal with social media avatars

Samsung’s developer conference kicks off later this week, and that means we might finally get to see the long-awaited reveal of its foldable smartphone. In anticipation of the reveal, Samsung has placed some not-so-subtle hints on its Twitter and Facebook profiles, changing the profile pictures on both accounts to show a folded take on the company’s logo.

It’s not unusual to see a Fortnite dance celebration at the end of a goal in any sport, so it was only a matter of time before the battle royale game officially teamed up with someone to bring that connection in-game. Some companies are replacing simple dials and knobs with giant touchscreens and even integrated Adobe Lightroom software. Taken in that light, the Yongnuo YN450 seems like the logical conclusion here: it’s a full-fledged mirrorless camera with support for Canon’s EF line of lenses, but it also runs Android Nougat on a 5-inch touchscreen display, via PetaPixel.

Amazon opens another 4-star store in Berkeley, California

Opening day at the Amazon brick and mortar store located in Soho in New York City. The cashless enterprise offers a variety of items that have been rated 4-stars or higher.

Amazon’s latest brick-and-mortar shop, one of its 4-star stores, opens today in Berkeley, California, marking the third 4-star location in just two months. The 4-star store, which sells a mix of Amazon-made electronics like Echo speakers and Fire tablets and other popular items sold on Amazon.com with at least 4-star customer rating or above, first opened in New York City back in late September. Last week, a listing for a new store in Colorado popped up, and Amazon confirmed that the location — in Lone Tree outside of Denver would be opening on Thursday of last week with one in Berkeley coming soon.

Amazon drops minimum purchase requirement for free holiday shipping

Starting today in the US, Amazon says it’s removing the minimum purchase requirement for an order to qualify for free delivery for non-Prime members. Normally, you have to spend $25 in order to qualify for free standard shipping — which usually takes between five and eight days — from the online retailer. An exact end-point was not given for the promotion, which Amazon described as a limited-time offer for the holiday season.

The promotion comes as Target last month introduced free two-day shipping in an attempt to capture more of the market during the holiday shopping rush. Elon Musk shows off the Boring Company ‘disturbingly long’ LA tunnel in a short video

In October, Elon Musk said that the Boring Company’s proof-of-concept tunnel in LA will open to the public on December 10th. Last night, he said on Twitter that the opening is still on track, and posted a video of his walk down the entire length of the tunnel.

The sped-up video takes just over 30 seconds, and shows off the tunnel that Musk describes as “disturbingly long.”

Motorola today announced that it’s bringing the Motorola One to the United States a few months after the Android One phone launched internationally. It will be available exclusively from Best Buy for $399; you’ll be able to order it online (in black) beginning November 9th or find it in stores (in white) as of November 11th. The One is sold as a GSM-unlocked device, so it’ll work on AT&T and T-Mobile, but not Verizon or Sprint.
