Spotify starts testing its Apple Watch app

Blizzard’s Overwatch League is making big changes with player wellness in mind

Back in May, Vytis Lasaitis, head coach of the Overwatch League’s Florida Mayhem, took a temporary break from his duties, citing his personal well-being. “OWL is a frantic marathon,” he wrote. “While it’s mostly an exhilarating journey, it also pushes all competitors to the limit and brings a heavy burden. Figuratively speaking, I’ve had to wear a lot of different hats since the regular season began, and it has now caught up to me. I’ve been experiencing burnout and various health issues since stage two, but it’s something I chose to neglect for a long time.”

Lasaitis wasn’t the only one. Other players and teams suffered from the league’s demanding 40-match schedule, which saw clubs play two games every week with little room for...

Tesla is what happens when you run a car company like a tech company

The problem with running a car company like a software company is that people expect a car company to run like a car company!

So last Friday, when Tesla updated its pricing on the Model 3 Performance to include the Performance Upgrades Package for free, some Tesla owners were miffed. They’d paid $5,000 for a feature that was now… free. “In hindsight, it looks like Tesla solely created that $5,000 package to upcharge early buyers knowing that there will be plenty of demand for the vehicle at the launch due to the reservation holders waiting for the performance version,” Fred Lambert wrote on Electrek.

Lambert was among those who’d paid $5,000 for the package. And he was pissed. “This is a shitty thing to do to a bunch of people who have...

With Diablo III and Dark Souls for Switch, you never have to leave the dungeon

Diablo III.

It’s a great week to be a Nintendo Switch owner with a penchant for exploring fantasy dungeons, taking on terrifying monsters, and collecting powerful loot. Two of the biggest action role-playing series in the world — Dark Souls and Diablo — have just made their Nintendo debut. And it turns out that their respective blends of monster bashing are even more appealing when you can take the dungeons with you.

Diablo III came out for PC in 2012 and has since become one of the best-selling video games of all time, despite a tumultuous launch that saw Blizzard roll back several aspects of its design and further overhaul the game with console versions and a major expansion pack. (I recommend reading this dramatic chapter on its development from...

China is making the internet less free, and US tech companies are helping

China’s restrictive internet policies are been actively exported around the world, according to a new report by non-profit organization Freedom House published yesterday. Freedom House, a bipartisan think tank funded primarily by the US government, says that China’s “digital authoritarianism” could threaten democracies in countries.

It’s the fourth year in a row that Freedom House has ranked China at the bottom for internet freedom. But at the same time that China’s internet remains a walled garden, companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Google are eagerly eyeing partnerships with Chinese businesses and increased expansion into the country. By not opposing China’s censorship policies directly and continuing to embrace the country, US tech...

Why Amazon’s future depends on moving from the internet to the physical world

The future of Amazon is starting to look a lot more complicated than just selling products on the internet. One of the company’s cashier-less Go convenience stores opened in San Francisco last week, with another store opening in the city later this year and more planned for Chicago and New York City in 2019. Coupled with Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods last year, these Go stores give us a glimpse into a future hybrid form of retail that Amazon could use to expand from e-commerce into real-world purchases at restaurants, grocery stores, and elsewhere.

Understanding why the company is interested in those sectors, and what its real competitors are, is the key to understanding how we buy everything in the future will change. Amazon CEO...

Apple Maps has surpassed Google Maps in detail… in 3.1 percent of the US

iOS 12 began the rollout of Apple Maps’ long-awaited redesign, which will deliver maps with far more detail using data collected by Apple directly. The updated maps currently only cover around 3.1 percent of the USA, focused around Northern California, but already some interesting differences are starting to emerge between Apple’s maps and those that Google uses for its own navigation software. The differences are documented in excruciatingly fine detail in a post by digital cartography blogger Justin O’Beirne.

The good news for Apple is that the sheer amount of natural cartographical detail its map contains far outstrips what Google currently offers. Vegetation detail is a particular highlight, with Apple’s maps even showing grass...

Elon Musk doesn’t care if people buy his ‘Blade Runner pickup truck’

An early concept image of the pickup truck shown at the unveiling of the Tesla Semi.

Elon Musk has given more details about Tesla’s upcoming pickup truck in a recent interview with Recode. The Tesla CEO noted that he wants it to be a “futuristic-like cyberpunk, Blade Runner pickup truck” and that he doesn’t care if many people want to buy it.

Musk has been open about his desire for Tesla to produce a pickup truck for some time now. Last year he announced plans for the truck at the Tesla Semi event, and later said that he expected it to be the next vehicle the company produces after the upcoming Model Y SUV. During an earnings call in August he said that the pickup was his “personal favorite” of the car maker’s upcoming vehicles.

Musk’s comments during the Recode interview with Kara Swisher suggest that the pickup...

The Google walkout offers a playbook for successful corporate protests

Companies are not democracies. But companies born in democracies sometimes display their values, as when social networks give their users cite the First Amendment in drafting their policies around content moderation.

The act of protest is not not limited to democracies, of course. And yet there was something wonderfully democratic about today’s Google walkout, in which thousands of Googlers left their desks to demonstrate against their leadership’s problems with swiftly separating sexual harassers from the company. A large group of loosely connected people, moved to common action, came together to seek redress for their grievances.

And I suspect, in the long run, that they will be successful.

The proximate cause for today’s events was...

Samsung is losing mobile ground to its Chinese rivals

Samsung’s mobile phone sales have been taking a hit this year. It’s a downward trend that started during last year’s holiday quarter and has persisted throughout 2018. Both IDC and Strategy Analytics report that Samsung’s smartphone sales have dipped around 13 percent in the recent quarter. That follows a 10 percent decline in Q2, a 2 percent drop in Q1, and a 4 percent dip in Q4 2017. It’s a clear sign that Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9 devices haven’t been competitive at the high-end, and Samsung is now losing ground in the mid- and low-end parts of the smartphone market.

Huawei, Samsung’s main Chinese rival, has soared this year. Huawei’s smartphone shipments are up around 32 percent this quarter, and the company has once...

Apple will no longer reveal how many iPhones, iPads, and Macs it sells

NASA’s Dawn spacecraft is dead

Apple’s price hike strategy is paying off

Despite a zero percent change in iPhone unit sales year over year, Apple ended its fiscal fourth quarter with a 29 percent revenue increase in its smartphone division. It also met its overall revenue target of $62.9 billion — up from $52.5 billion this quarter last year. Both sales and profit exceeded Wall Street expectations for the quarter.

Apple’s Q4 quarter ended in September, meaning it only accounted for the first few weeks of the new iPhone XS and XS Max going on sale. (The iPhone XR, which was also announced in September, did not become available for preorder until October.) Despite the slow sales growth, the average selling price per iPhone is now $793, up from $724 in Q3.

The increase suggests that Apple’s price hike strategy...

China state-owned company charged with stealing US tech trade secrets

A state-owned Chinese company was charged by the Justice Department on Thursday for stealing trade secrets from an American chip manufacturer. It’s the fourth instance in which the Department has indicted Chinese conspirators for attempting to steal trade secrets in the past month, and with this momentum, the Department is announcing a new initiative to combat economic espionage from the country.
