Avengers: Infinity War has crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide

Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War has broken another record: it’s become the fastest movie to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office, overtaking the prior record-holder, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Deadline reports that that the film reached this milestone in just 11 days: it took The Force Awakens 12 days in 2015. The film’s success thus far has allowed Disney to cross the $3 billion mark for its overall box office thus far in 2018. What’s notable here is that Avengers reached this milestone before it opens in China on May 11th — once it does, that number will likely jump considerably.

As the URL suggests, it’s an emoji scavenger hunt — a new AI experiment created by Google that shows how the company’s machine learning tools can be used to make fun little games. An engineer modded a drone to rescue this puppy

In today’s adorable-and-I’m-not-crying-you’re-crying news, NDTL reports that an engineer in New Delhi named Milind Raj saved a puppy using a drone he equipped with a giant claw.

Raj was out for a morning walk in New Delhi when he heard whimpering and traced the sound to a puppy that had become stuck in a boggy drain between two roads. Raj said the condition of the puppy was “miserable” and tells The Verge that local residents had heard the animal crying for two days. Others hadn’t stepped up to the task of trying to rescue the pup because “the drain was so filthy,” says Raj. “It was not possible for a human to rescue the puppy without endangering their own life.”

Google says political-leaning advertisers will require an ID to verify their identity

Google will implement new transparency rules concerning US election ads this week. In a blog post, Google Senior Vice President Kent Walker says that anyone who wants to purchase election ads in the US will now be required to prove that they’re a US citizen or resident by providing a “a government-issued ID and other key information.”

Google also says that it will begin to release a new Transparency Report that will outline who is purchasing political ads, and how much they’re spending, and will also roll out a “searchable library” for users to search through to find the identity of advertisers.

The move follows updated policies from Facebook, which said earlier last month that it will require advertisers and page managers to verify...

While everyone was watching Infinity War last weekend, I ended up streaming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I’ve missed most of the core Avengers saga, but there’s still a lot of fun to be had watching the more disconnected films in the MCU. Guardians is particularly accessible, thanks to how completely removed it is — and just how tonally it feels like its own thing.

I enjoyed the movie, but one thing that really surprised me was how long its final sequence was... if you can even call it a single sequence. The climactic battle takes up nearly half of the movie, with multiple story beats happening just within that fight. Maybe that’s not all that strange for a blockbuster film, but I was still surprised by how effectively it could tell...

Apple today admitted that some iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models running iOS 11.3 or later may have a bug that disables the microphone during phone calls, MacRumors spotted through a leaked document. The few users with the affected devices may see their speaker button grayed-out when making calls or video chatting through FaceTime. The issue seems to only affect phones running that version of iOS or versions after 11.3.

Some users on Reddit and Twitter have reported experiencing such microphone issues in the past few months and the leaked document, sent out to its Apple Authorized Service Providers network, apparently confirms Apple is aware of the problem.

Waymo self-driving minivan involved in crash in Arizona

A self-driving vehicle operated by Waymo was involved in a crash in Chandler, Arizona, on Friday afternoon, according to local news stations. Images of the crash scene showed a Waymo minivan with its side caved in and another vehicle with a smashed front end. There were minor injuries reported at the scene.

Chandler police said the Waymo van was in autonomous mode with an occupant behind the wheel at the time of the crash, but it was not the “violator vehicle,” according to ABC 15 News. A spokesperson for the Chandler Police Department and Waymo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

LG’s budget K30 phone comes to T-Mobile in the US

LG refreshed its midrange phones at Mobile World Congress this year. And while we were all distracted with its flashy flagship devices this week, one of those affordable phones — the K30 — became available at T-Mobile. It’s a rebranded K10, which LG announced in February this year. It features a 5.3-inch HD display, 32GB of storage, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 2,880mAh battery. T-Mobile doesn’t even list the phone’s RAM (likely 2GB) or processor model, so that’s a great sign. It’s running Android 7.1 Nougat, unlike the K10, which runs Marshmallow, according to XDA-Developers and T-Mobile.

In April 2017, when the first season of Netflix’s acclaimed Dear White People premiered, many critics and viewers remarked on how “timely” it was. After all, the half-hour series — which deeply explored topics such as racism, black identity, and the myth of the “post-racial” society — debuted just a few months after Donald Trump was sworn into office. Season 2, which premiered on Friday, May 4th, focuses largely on the resurgence of white supremacists, alt-right trolls on the internet, and the psychological effects of racial trauma. GoDaddy pulled white nationalist Richard Spencer’s ‘alt-right’ site offline

Domain registrar GoDaddy has taken down white nationalist Richard Spencer’s site Altright.com, saying the site “crossed the line” in promoting violence. BuzzFeed reported the news yesterday, noting that Spencer had also been kicked off Facebook a few weeks earlier. Altright.com is currently offline, and GoDaddy told BuzzFeed that Spencer had 48 hours to transfer to a new registrar.

When a site “crosses over to promoting, encouraging, or otherwise engaging in specific acts of violence against any person, we will take action,” a GoDaddy spokesperson said. “It is our determination that altright.com crossed the line and encouraged and promoted violence in a direct and threatening manner.” Spencer told BuzzFeed that he was “working on solving...

Fox is turning Monty Python’s Spamalot into a movie for some reason
