Fortnite is now open to everyone on iOS

Epic Games’ Fortnite is officially out of beta on mobile, meaning anyone with an iPhone SE / 6S or later running iOS 11 (or an iPad mini 4 / Air 2 or later) can download the game and jump into a match. Epic announced the news on its Twitter feed this morning. Previously, Fortnite on iOS was available in an invite-only beta period, though invites were generously given out and friends were able to invite up to three others to join the free-to-play platform. Apple has applied to patent a VR system for autonomous cars that would use interior screens and VR headsets to alter the interior of the vehicle, as reported by VentureBeat.

The patent, applied for in September 2017 and published last week, is framed as a way to “address problems with vehicles in motion that may result in motion sickness for passengers” by replacing views of the real world with virtual environments. ESPN’s standalone subscription streaming service, ESPN+, will launch on April 12th for $4.99 per month. Customers can also choose to pay the annual price of $49.99. The service lacks the core ESPN cable channel itself, but the company hopes a comprehensive mix of professional and college sports can make up for that and bring in customers anyway. Facebook will force advertisers to prove they have user consent for ad targeting over email

Facebook has been rolling out a series of changes to its platform that are all aimed at closing up loopholes following the Cambridge Analytica data breach. Now, the social media giant will be launching a certification tool that will check and ensure that marketers are only sending ads to email addresses that were rightfully obtained with user consent.

The tool is called the Custom Audiences certification tool. A Facebook rep wrote about the tool to a marketing client in a message spotted by TechCrunch. They wrote, “Advertisers will be required to represent and warrant that proper user consent has been obtained for the use of any data uploaded.”

Last month, I picked up The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies, a new book by Wall Street Journal reporter Ben Fritz. Fritz looks closely at the rise of prestige TV shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, as well as mega-franchises like Disney’s Star Wars and Marvel properties, and what their existence means for the future of Hollywood. Telegram has raised a total of $1.7 billion from its two pre-ICO sales

In February, secure messaging service Telegram launched a presale for the its cryptocurency prior to an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), raising $850 million from 81 investors, and later that month, The Verge learned that it was launching a second private presale, in which it aimed to double that amount. Bloomberg Technology reports that the company did just that, and has raised a total of $1.7 billion in March between the two sales.

In a filing to the Securities and Exchanges Commission, Telegram says that it raised an additional $850 million from 94 investors in the second sale, bringing the total amount to $1.7 billion. It also says that it might “pursue one or more subsequent offerings” beyond these first two sales.

There are a ton of podcasts out there, but finding the right one can be difficult. In our new column Pod Hunters, we cover what we’ve been listening to that we can’t stop thinking about.

Cloudflare launches 1.1.1.1 DNS service that will speed up your internet

Cloudflare is launching its own consumer DNS service today, on April Fools’ Day, that promises to speed up your internet connection and help keep it private. The service is using https://1.1.1.1, and it’s not a joke but an actual DNS resolver that anyone can use. Cloudflare claims it will be “the Internet’s fastest, privacy-first consumer DNS service.” While OpenDNS and Google DNS both exist, Cloudflare is focusing heavily on the privacy aspect of its own DNS service with a promise to wipe all logs of DNS queries within 24 hours.

Next month is April, which means it’s time for the second season of HBO’s Westworld to arrive. Court rules that musician wrongly suffered hearing loss while rehearsing music for Apocalypse Now attack scene

A British viola player has won an important case against London’s Royal Opera House, after the court sided with his claim that he suffered permanent hearing damage during a performance of Richard Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries”

Chris Goldscheider, 45, is a professional musician who spent 10 years with the Royal Opera House in London. But, he says, he was left with permanent hearing loss in 2012 after rehearsing “Ride of the Valkyries,” part of Wagner’s epic Ring Cycle, famously used by Francis Ford Coppola during the attack scene in Apocalypse Now.

Goldscheider retired two years later and today says that he has moved his family to the country and “avoids restaurants and other loud places,” according to the Washington Post.

Snapchat throws shade at Facebook with Russian bot filter

Snapchat is taking full advantage of Facebook’s position in the news cycle on April Fools’ Day this year with a genius amount of shade. After trolling Facebook last year with a lighthearted Instagram-style filter, Snapchat is going one step further with a Facebook filter that’s designed to recreate Russian bots liking your posts. The filter places a Facebook UI around your photo with Cyrillic script-like text, and even includes likes from “your mum” and “a bot.”

Uber is shutting down UberRush, its on-demand delivery service, reports TechCrunch. The company said in an email to customers that it will be ending the program on June 30th, 2018.

The company launched the on-demand delivery service in 2014 in Manhattan, which allowed users to hire someone to pick up a package and deliver it to another location. The company later expanded the service to Chicago and San Francisco in 2015, but while it opened its Application Program Interface (API) for private businesses to use it as a delivery option, it never expanded beyond those three cities. The Hugo Awards are one of speculative fiction’s most prestigious prizes.
