The Apple Watch’s fall detection has already been credited with saving lives, and now Google is applying that sort of thinking to car safety. According to XDA Developers, Google is at work on a Personal Safety app with “car crash detection.” With the help of various sensors including the accelerometer and even the microphone, Pixel phones will attempt to detect an accident. If one occurs, the phone will loudly sound an alarm, and if there’s no response, it will automatically call 911 and provide your location to emergency services.

XDA Developers managed to catch a Play Store listing that Google posted prematurely, which included several screenshots of the Personal Safety app. Based on those images, people will have more than one...

Microsoft’s new Surface lineup appears to have leaked almost in its entirety, thanks to product images obtained by journalist and leaker Evan Blass. Blass posted a series of images to his Twitter account this evening featuring what he says are the upcoming Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop 3 (13-inch and 15-inch), and an ARM-powered Surface 2-in-1 device.

The images look authentic, and Blass has a storied track record of getting his hands on pre-release images of countless devices over the years. Blass also ended his series of tweets with yet another product announcement, “Not pictured here: dual-screen Surface,” although that seems to indicate Blass may have an image to share later.

Apple’s bumpy rollout of iOS 13 has hit another roadblock in the form of major iCloud Reminders issues. Since the release of Apple’s mobile OS update last week, some users have reported problems trying to sync notes to the revamped Reminders app, which Apple redesigned this year to feature a new look and feel and some more robust organizational features. Other users are reporting missing lists or entirely deleted reminders, names of lists resetting to defaults, dates and times not transferring properly, and other syncing errors.

HP’s Spectre x360 13 has undergone a fairly drastic makeover for 2019. It’s still very much a Spectre: the premium 2-in-1 has glossy edges, a cleverly placed power button, and one USB-C port embedded into its two diagonally cut corners. But HP has cut away a lot of the excess from the old design, making its latest version smaller. Still, somehow, it feels bigger when you use it.

That effect is achieved in part by its significantly trimmed-down top and bottom bezels, giving it a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio. The top bezel is 5.8mm thick, seemingly too thin to fit a webcam. HP’s latest Chromebooks, the x360 12b and 14b, are the company’s first to support the Universal Stylus Initiative (USI), the new standard that lets compatible styluses work seamlessly across a range of different devices. Now, after two seasons, the league is looking to expand beyond the NBA with a new club based in Shanghai. YouTube has introduced an updated filtering system for managing comment sections, with the goal of making it easier for creators to find questions and separate comments by subscriber count.

Creators can receive thousands upon thousands of comments on their videos, making a robust filter system instrumental for engaging with viewers. Taiwan’s Gogoro has a new scooter coming out that’s smaller and more adaptable than anything else in the company’s growing stable. It’s called “Viva,” and it will be available for $1,800 in Taiwan in October, and “some global markets” starting in 2020.

At 80 kilograms (176 pounds), the Viva is the smallest and most nimble scooter that Gogoro’s created to date. It’s meant to be a city commuter, something that can replace a 50-100cc gas scooter that’s often used for short trips. As such, it has a range of just 85 kilometers (just shy of 53 miles).

MacRumors was first to report on Kuo’s latest research note, which says that the phones’ “metal frame surface will be changed to a similar design to the iPhone 4, replacing the current surface design.”

Kuo, who has a good track record of predicting Apple’s announcements long before the company makes them official, previously indicated that next year’s iPhones will have an all-new design. Impossible Foods’ plant-based ‘meat’ is coming to 102 more stores

Every day, I use Alexa to turn on my lights, switch TV channels, and set timers when I’m cooking. Amazon’s digital assistant is the center of my smart home, but once I step out of the house, Alexa might as well be dead to me.

Like many in the US, I use an iPhone that’s tightly controlled by Apple. Sure, there’s an Alexa app I can use, but I can’t summon the digital assistant with the regular “Alexa!” on my iPhone, so I mostly use the app to tweak Alexa settings. Things are slightly better in the Android world, where you can set Alexa as the default device assistant, but you still can’t easily summon it with a wake word.

Mario Kart Tour launches with subscription option priced the same as Apple Arcade

Mario Kart Tour is finally available to download on iOS and Android today, marking the long-awaited debut of Nintendo’s kart racer on mobile devices. The release date was revealed a month ago, but what wasn’t known until now was that the game has an optional “Gold Pass” subscription.

The Gold Pass gives you various in-game items and badges as you play, and also unlocks the faster 200cc mode. It’s not really clear from the game’s website what any of these items are for. There’s a two-week free trial, after which you’ll have to pay $4.99 a month.

Original Jurassic Park cast is returning for Jurassic World 3

Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum, are set to reprise their iconic roles for the third Jurassic World movie, the film’s director has confirmed. Speaking at a screening on Tuesday night, Colin Trevorrow said that the three would have sizable roles in the sequel, according to Collider.

The three stars have remained largely absent from the franchise after it was rebooted in 2015 with Jurassic World. Although Goldblum had a small role in 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Neill has been absent from the franchise since leading 2001’s Jurassic Park III, in which Dern had a cameo.

McDonald’s is now accepting job applications through Alexa and Google Assistant

McDonald’s today announced a new initiative the fast food chain is calling the “Apply Thru,” in which owners of Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant devices can begin job applications using standard “Alexa” and “Ok Google” voice commands. The company is envisioning this as a way to give young people more ways to start entry-level careers at one of its restaurants, and that apparently extends to artificial intelligence-powered digital voice assistants.

‘Right to be forgotten’ only applies to Google in the EU, court rules

The EU’s top court has ruled that Google does not need to remove links to sensitive information in all versions of its search engine worldwide when responding to “right to be forgotten” requests. Reuters reports that the European Court of Justice ruled that Google must only remove links in versions of its search engine meant for use in EU member states.

“There is no obligation under EU law, for a search engine operator who grants a request for de-referencing made by a data subject... to carry out such a de-referencing on all the versions of its search engine,” the court said.

Google was fined €100,000 (around $110,000) by France’s privacy watchdog CNIL back in 2016 for failing to delist search results globally, and not just in Europe....

Samsung will let Galaxy Fold owners replace their screens once for $149

In just a few days, the Samsung Galaxy Fold will again go on sale in the US, for $1980. One of the big mysteries about the re-launch was what Samsung would do to try to avoid another debacle. The answer, it turns out, is just a ridiculous amount of education and warnings. And if none of that convinces purchasers to baby their Folds, Samsung is allowing for a one-time-only screen replacement for $149.

Xiaomi’s Mi Mix series has always pushed the boundaries of phone screens and form factors, from the original model that kicked off the bezel wars to last year’s sliding, notchless Mi Mix 3. Now, just as we’re starting to see “waterfall” displays with extreme curved edges, Xiaomi is taking this to a wild new level with the Mi Mix Alpha.

Xiaomi announces Mi 9 Pro 5G with 30W fast wireless charging

Xiaomi has announced the Mi 9 Pro 5G, a new variant of its generally very good Mi 9 with faster chips, connectivity, and charging. It’s based around a Snapdragon 855+ processor with 8 or 12GB of RAM, has what sounds like the same 6.4-inch 1080p OLED display but now with “professional” calibration, and of course a 5G modem that Xiaomi says offers full coverage for China’s three major carriers.

Xiaomi is one of the only Chinese phone makers that supports wireless charging at all, and the Mi 9 Pro 5G should be a leader in that area: it can be wirelessly charged at 30W on a dedicated stand, filling its 4,000mAh battery in 69 minutes. Wired charging is up to 40W and should give you a full charge after 48 minutes.
