California governor signs nation’s toughest net neutrality bill into law

California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed the nation’s toughest net neutrality bill into law. The law will prohibit internet providers from blocking or throttling any legal apps and websites, and it will ban paid prioritization of content. The law also goes further than the since-overturned federal net neutrality rules by banning zero-rating — offering free data — of specific apps.
Several other states have taken action on net neutrality, but most chose to enact protections in a looser fashion that didn’t enforce it on all providers and wiggled around the Federal Communication Commission’s prohibition on state net neutrality laws. California, on the other hand, chose to just go for it, and it’s enacted a law that very clearly replicates and...

How to Quit Drinking For 'Sober for October'

There was a point in my mid 20s where I had a solid 4-beer-a-day habit. At the time I was dating a brewer and my entire social life just happened to be tied to beer. Conference app for the UK’s Conservative Party leaked attendee data

This weekend, members of the UK’s Conservative Party kicked off their annual conference in Birmingham, using the event to highlight their plans and priorities for the coming year. This year’s event had a rocky start: its official app allowed users to access personal contact information of other attendees, without a password.
According to the BBC, the app had a button that allowed users to press a button and enter an attendee’s e-mail address, which gave them access without prompting them for a password. Several attendees reported that they were not only able to access non-public information in the accounts of various party members such as phone numbers and e-mail addresses, but they could also change said information. Various...

The FBI used a suspect’s face to unlock his iPhone in Ohio case

When Apple debuted Face ID with the iPhone X last year, it raised an interesting legal question: can you be compelled to unlock your phone by looking at it? In an apparent first, Forbes reports that the FBI got a suspect to unlock his phone during a raid in August.
In August, the FBI raided the home of Grant Michalski, looking for evidence that he had sent or received child pornography. They were armed with a search warrant [warning: this documentation contains explicit descriptions of sexual abuse] which allowed them to search Michalski’s computer for evidence, and during the raid, agents recovered his iPhone X.
The agents who found the iPhone asked Michalski to unlock the device via Face ID, which he did. They “placed the [phone] into...

Dad Adam Driver learns how to play Fortnite on SNL

Saturday Night Live returned for its 44th season this weekend, with The Last Jedi’s Adam Driver returning as host. While he didn’t reprise his role of Matt the Radar Technician from his 2016 appearance, he did jump on another cultural bandwagon: Fortnite.
The sketch opens with Dad Driver joining a squad, explaining that his ex-wife’s new husband has been playing the game with his son, and that he wants to find a way to keep up.
It doesn’t go well. Driver’s naïve character is truly out of his element, which makes for a fun skit in and of itself — running into walls and messing up the entire mission, but what really makes the sketch is the fact that SNL decided to forgo using game footage for the sketch. Instead, they reenacts the...

Leak reveals Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 6 might lack USB-C ports

Microsoft is holding a Surface hardware event on Tuesday (October 2nd) in New York City, and a new leak reveals the company will announce a Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 6. We’d been expecting Microsoft to refresh both these devices at the event, but we’d also been assuming the new hardware would come with modern USB-C ports. Germany site WinFuture claims that neither the Surface Laptop 2 or Surface Pro 6 will include USB-C ports.
Instead, Microsoft is said to be sticking with its trusted mini DisplayPort and Surface Connector combo for connecting to displays and charging the device. If the report is genuine then this would be a surprising move from Microsoft, and it would also match rumored leaked photos of the Surface Laptop 2. The...

The Gardens Between is an unexpected lesson in theoretical physics

It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend.
The Gardens Between is about two kids, Ariana and Frendt, exploring surreal islands that are made from objects in their shared memories. But you don’t actually control either character directly — you control the flow of time. At first this seems like a difficult thing to wrap your head around. But because of how you are able to observe the forward and backward movement of time, it all makes sense, as you’re able to understand the causality of events. However, when I think about how the characters might see these events...

Everything coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Now in October

October is nearly here, so it’s time to think about Halloween, and streaming services are doing their best to offer up a selection of the spooky, supernatural, and suspenseful. Netflix is leading the way with a number of original movies and TV shows coming to subscribers over the course of the month. Mike Flanagan’s TV series adaptation of the Shirley Jackson novel The Haunting of Hill House will arrive on October 12th, along with Apostle, the new period horror film from director Gareth Evans (The Raid). Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the latest adaptation of the Archie comic, will arrive on October 26th, and it looks to be including a healthy dose of Satanic weirdness to differentiate itself from the 1990s Melissa Joan Hart version....

Minecraft is getting a dungeon-crawling spinoff next year

The Minecraft universe is set to expand once again. Today at Minecon, developer Mojang revealed a new dungeon-crawler set in the blocky universe. Called Minecraft: Dungeons, the new experience is described as “an all-new action-adventure game inspired by classic dungeon crawlers, where you’ll constantly discover new weapons and items that will help you defeat a ruthless swarm of new-and-nasty mobs. You’ll fight or flee through canyons, swamps, and — of course — mines!”
Dungeons is, naturally, set in the Minecraft universe, but it looks like it will offer a more structured experience than the sandbox building game. You can explore solo or play with up to four friends. It seems like a pretty natural extension of the best-selling Minecraft,...

9 new trailers you should watch this week

I’m not a huge fan of superhero movies, but some get so much buzz and seem to do things so differently — like Black Panther or Guardians of the Galaxy — that I’m compelled to check them out. That got me to watch Logan the other week, which is one of the only X-Men movies I’ve seen.
And it’s kind of wild how unlike a superhero movie it feels. Mostly, it’s the visuals — replace the superpowers with real-world weapons, and little else would look out of place. It helps to make the film far more of a drama about Wolverine than a superhero story about a planet that needs to be saved. The intimate stakes helped with that, too.
One thing I found particularly interesting, though, was how much the film’s plot mirrored Children of Men (minus the...

What Tesla’s union-busting trial means for the rest of Silicon Valley

In some sense Tesla’s union question is an existential one: is Tesla a tech company or a car company? Car companies tend to have strong unions, while tech companies do not.
Musk runs Tesla like a tech company. Tesla’s done a top-to-bottom redesign of cars, and of the factory workflow. There are sudden pivots, and plenty of investment, despite a lack of profit — so far, so tech. Then you have the cars themselves: have to charge their batteries, the company can push over-the-air software updates to your car and totally change how it works, and uh they’re hackable. But they’re still cars: they go on roads, you drive them, and in most states you are legally compelled to buy car insurance for them.
Unions do exist in tech, though mostly among...

The PS4 Pro bundle with Red Dead Redemption 2 is this week’s best deal

Most deals come and go rather quickly, like eBay’s day-long 15 percent off special on Thursday, but some stick around for a while. Case in point: the week’s best ongoing deal is Sony’s new PS4 Pro Bundle, which includes the 1TB, 4K-ready console, a DualShock 4 controller, and Red Dead Redemption 2 for $399.
This is the normal price for a PS4 Pro without a game tossed in, so getting Rockstar Games’ latest for free sweetens the pot. Some bemoan that this PS4 Pro doesn’t feature a custom design, like we’ve seen with Spider-Man or Destiny 2, but you’ll probably be too enraptured with the game to care once it arrives.
You can preorder this bundle at Amazon, GameStop, Walmart, and Best Buy

Those who loved the studio’s work have been reminiscing over the past week, and in addition to fans sharing their favorite moments, many former developers have used the studio’s closure as an opportunity to share internal jokes.

MoviePass is now forcing former users to opt out of new plan or risk being charged

The latest attempt from struggling theater subscription service MoviePass to retain its dwindling user base comes in the form of yet another change to its monthly plan. This time, however, the company is automatically enrolling lapsed former subscribers into its service, saying its choosing those users to be part of a “select test group” to try a version of MoviePass similar to its original one-movie-per-day plan.
In an email sent to select MoviePass customers who decided not to opt into the company’s revised three-movie monthly plan, first unveiled last month, the company says it’s decided to enroll those people into a new subscription because “we really hope you begin enjoying your MoviePass subscription.” If they don’t want to be...

This Pulp Fiction-Brett Kavanaugh mashup is a perfect end to a horrible week

I don’t know about you, but for me, this week was bad. It was really bad! Truly, there’s nothing quite like working on the internet, covering internet news, all while the internet insists on reminding you, every single minute of your day, just how enthusiastic the people running your country are about putting sexual abusers in power. Boy, is it bad!
Ironically, this miserable fact is also how the best memes are born. The highest-quality memers online today — much like offline traditional comedians — do two things exceptionally well:
- They possess a deep well of pop cultural awareness, and
- They either know how to completely distract you from the absurd Hellmouth that public life has become, or they know exactly how to make the...

California just became the first state with an Internet of Things cybersecurity law

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed a cybersecurity law covering “smart” devices, making California the first state with such a law. The bill, SB-327, was introduced last year and passed the state senate in late August.
Starting on January 1st, 2020, any manufacturer of a device that connects “directly or indirectly” to the internet must equip it with “reasonable” security features, designed to prevent unauthorized access, modification, or information disclosure. If it can be accessed outside a local area network with a password, it needs to either come with a unique password for each device, or force users to set their own password the first time they connect. That means no more generic default credentials for a hacker to guess.

Facebook faces class-action lawsuit over massive new hack

Facebook is already facing immense fallout from revelations this morning that a hacker exploited a security flaw in a popular feature of the social network to steal account credentials of as many as 50 million users. The company is now facing a class-action complaint filed on behalf of one California resident, Carla Echavarria, and one Virginia resident, Derick Walker. Both allege that Facebook’s lack of proper security has exposed them and additional potential class members to a significantly increased chance of identity theft as a result of the breach.
The lawsuit was filed today in US District Court for the Northern District of California. The complaint alleges Facebook is guilty of unlawful business practices, deceit by concealment,...

Elon Musk reportedly asks Tesla employees to test full self-driving version of Autopilot

The version of Autopilot that Elon Musk has long promised would make Tesla cars capable of driving themselves is reportedly being handed over to a small group of employees for testing, according to an internal email obtained by Bloomberg.
In the email, Musk promised there were about 100 spots available in the testing program, and that he would take volunteers on a “first come, first served basis.”
Willing employees have to agree to sharing “300 to 400 hours of driving feedback with the company’s Autopilot team by the end of next year,” according to Bloomberg. Musk is apparently offering a sizable kickback, though — workers who sign up won’t have to pay for the supposedly fully self-driving version of Autopilot, or for a premium...
